   Hmm. Yes, actually, Earthbenders have been demonstrated sinking people into the ground. Remember the crazy Earth general who wanted to send Aang into the avatar state reliably? He sunk Katara. The wiki states that this is done by transmuting earth into quicksand, which is consistent with the animation of sinking people- Rather than opening up a crevasse beneath Katara, crazy general guy drops her into the ground.
