Russano the Wise is not as honorable as many people say. When Ruggan Bor lay down his weapon, honorably I must add, Russano has Bor and his clan crawl on all fours away from Mossflower. Ruggan surrendered and Russano humiliated him for no particular reason. They Juskabor didn't even attack the abbey! I loved Russano and while I do still like him I don't like him as much any more because of his jerk move to Ruggan Bor and his clan!

What is your opinion on the matter, and YES it is honorable to surrender when you lay down your weapon as to not be killed and have your clan killed as well!

A couple of questions for you. Why should Ruggan Bor be treated in an honorable manner? Is he worthy of being treated with kindness, after his horde almost slaughtered the Abbey inhabitants? Is the humiliation received spiteful, or is it to drill into the heads of the would-be attackers that there are consequences to their actions?

I get what you mean and you obviously put more thought into this, but I just didn't like how he made them crawl. I get maybe relieving them their weapons and I get maybe putting Ruggan at the back but making them crawl is just such a de- humanizing (de-beastizing? de-animalizing?)  thing to do to them when they didn't even attack. I think I just feel it wasn't a very Russano the Wise thing to do. Yes he wants them to leave and learn a hard lesson, but Bor had put his weapon down. You don't hit a beast when he's down, that is a very vermin thing to do which didn't feel like Russano. And even though I see what you mean, it's still not a very honorable thing to do. I thank you for that post though, that made me think.

I think you're giving Ruggan a bit too much credit.  It doesn't really matter that he didn't attack; he was going to and would have, but was stopped by Russano.  Just because he wasn't able to follow through doesn't make it any better.  As for Ruggan putting down his weapon, I don't believe that was a matter of honor.  It was simply the only way he was going to get out of that situation alive.  He's a cool character, so I understand why you like him, but you have to remember that if Russano hadn't arrived, Ruggan and his clan would have murdered all the inhabitants of Redwall.

In fact, what Russano should have done, in my opinion, was end the vermin right there and then.  Throughout the books, it's shown that vermin, in general, don't learn.  Being merciful to them just means that they get to survive and murder other goodbeasts down the road.  Compared to wholesale slaughter, a little humiliation is nothing.

That's just my thoughts, though.  ^-^

I reckon Ruggan Bol should have been punished more, not less.

And Kade Rivok, I agree Russano should have killed them. But he was infront of Redwallers and I think it would be best to set them free with no weapons.

(yes I love ruggan bor and am probably being to nice to him) It still didn't feel very Russano too me. But the more I think about it, the more I understand Russano was drilling it in to their heads. But when an enemy has surrendered, you usually imprison them (but that wouldn't work in this scenario) you could just escort them away and give them the feeling of defeat without having them being treated like animals (you know what I mean) or you could just kill them.
Now killing them, THAT would not be a very Russano thing to do.

And surrendering to protect yourself and your people is still considered honorable. (but I am almost definitly being way to nice to Bor)

I definitely agree with the second part of that.
