Help with Posting

How do I update my profile?
Click on the profile button at the top of the page. In the sidebar under Modify Profile, click on Forum Profile Information. Here, you can edit your profile picture (avatar), personal text (the text the appears under your profile picture), signature and other personal information.

How do I make a signature?
If you look at the top of the page you'll see a bunch of buttons under the Redwall Abbey Forum banner. Click on the profile button. At the right side of that page, under Modify Profile, click on Forum Profile Information. Scroll down and you'll see a Signature section.

To add an image, use the same tags you'd use to add an image to a board post. Use the [-img][-/img] (without the hyphens, of course) and put the link inside the tags. You can't use an image from your computer directly, so you'll have to host a picture on the Internet, like Imgur or Minus, after uploading your image.

Make sure you read our rules about images in signatures. Images larger than 40x350 pixels are prohibited.

How do I change my profile picture?
First, click on the profile button at the top of the page. In the sidebar under Modify Profile, click on Forum Profile Information. The first option on that page is to change your profile picture. To upload your own picture, click the Browse button next to the option that says I will upload my own picture, choose the picture you want to use from your hard drive, and then hit Change Profile at the bottom of the page. You can also enter the URL of a pre-uploaded picture or use one of the default pictures.

How do I put a link in a post?
Click on the button in the BBC tags section.
[url][/url]
The above code should appear. The URL you want to post goes in the tags after an = and the title of the URL goes between the tags, like this:
[url=http://www.redwallabbey.com/]Redwall Abbey[/url]
Redwall Abbey

How do I post a picture?
The URL of the picture you're trying to post should end in something like .jpg, .gif or .png. If it doesn't end with something like that then it won't show up when you use the image tags. There are several different ways you can find the URL of your image, and they vary depending on the web browser and type of computer you're using.

I'm going to do an example with Internet Explorer on Windows, because I assume that's what most of you are using.

1. Go to the page containing the image you want to use. I want the picture of Redwall Abbey from this page: http://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Redwall_Abbey
2. Right-click on the image and select Properties.
3. There should be a field marked Address or URL. Copy what is in that field. The URL of my picture is: http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130119054944/redwall/images/3/35/Abbey.gif
4. Close the properties window.
5. In the reply screen of the Redwall forum, click this button: then paste the URL of your picture between the tags. It should look like this:
[img]http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130119054944/redwall/images/3/35/Abbey.gif[/img]
6. Hit preview and your post should look like this:

Remember, if you've done a google image search, you can't use that URL in the image tags. A URL that looks like this won't work. You have to go to the website and get the URL of the actual image.

How do I quote a post?
Look at the top right of the post you wish to quote. There will be a quote button. Click on this and you will be taken to the reply screen with the post you quoted in
[quote]Cool post[/quote]
tags.
You can also insert quotes by scrolling down to the topic summary at the bottom of the reply page and clicking the insert quote link to the right of the post.

How do I add a youtube video to my posts?
You need to use the youtube tags. For example, if I wanted to post this video of the Redwall TV series intro I'd copy the URL of the video and put in in youtube tags, like this:
[youtube]_2W_3uXqsfw[/youtube]

The result will look like this:

How do I add a spoiler tags?
Put the spoiler between the tags as in the following example:
[spoiler]Redwall is awesome[/spoiler]
It should come out like this:
Spoiler
Redwall is awesome.
[close]
If you want to say what book the spoiler is from, use the following:
[spoiler=Redwall]Redwall is awesome.[/spoiler]
Redwall
Redwall is awesome.
[close]

I tried to upload an animated gif as my profile picture, but it's not moving. Why?
The image you're trying to upload is probably too big. If the forum has to resize a gif it'll only resize one frame, so the animation will be lost. Instead of uploading the picture directly to the forum you can upload it to an image hosting site like tinypic first, or you can resize the image using sites like picasion.

Is Jukka a computer program?
Yes, we think.

Staff members are made up of moderators and administrators. New staff members are suggested and appointed by the existing staff when they are needed. What is a Season Namer?
Every season a member is chosen by the forum staff to name the season. The member must have contributed to the forum in a positive way and be a good role-model for other members. Everyone is a candidate as long as they follow the rules, respect others, and make every post count. A list of all previous Season Namers can be found here.

Which basically boils down to how to use BB code...

If you check here and your question never does get covered, then feel free to make use of our Questions and Answers thread!

Posting an image

To post an image, use the BB code tags [img]http://[/img]

And then you copy and paste the image address into the space between.

Don't forget that it has to be the image address. Just the image won't work.

Also, if you're uploading an image you'll want to use a hosting service too. Imgur, Photobucket, postimage.org. All are viable ways of uploading.

To copy an image you have to control click. Mouse the cursor over the image and press control, then click. There's a menu that shows up with lots of different commands, near the bottom there's an option to copy image address. Click on that, and then paste it between the image tags.

Spoilers

This is quite simple. To post a spoiler, you use the appropriate tags.

And, naturally, put the spoiler content between the tags. It's perfectly fine to use other BB code tags within the spoiler, even additional spoiler tags. (just ask James)

Another function is, within the first tag, to title it.

[spoiler=(title)]

Quotes

Yes, you can quote someone without pressing the button. A written out quote looks like this:

QuoteGroddil's quite good at this.

As with spoilers, you can stack quotes and use other tags within them. You can title them the same way.

Quote from: Trollzlolololololol

URLs

This is one of the harder tags to master. URLs allow you to link sites and images while making it appear as normal text, colored red. The final tag looks somewhat like this:

[url=*insert the link here*](insert text here)[/url]

For example:

Glorious.

Text editing functions

There are several functions that allow you to alter the appearance of posted text.

Bold, italics, and underline

The main ones.

Italics:

Bold:

Underlined:

Size, font, color

The more finessed edits.

Size can go from as little as 1 to as big as 99.

[color=green, navy, red, etc.][/color

Size

Size can go from 1 to 99.

[size=10pt]This is the default size.[/size]
[size=1000pt]This would still appear as 99.[/size]
Quotes

To quote someone without the button, just type this (without periods):

[quote=WHOEVER YOU ARE QUOTING]QUOTE[./quote]
Mentioning members

If you want a specific member to see your post, you can mention them. If you are mentioned, a [1] will appear under your mentions tab, along with a link to the mentioned post. To do it, simply type:

@MEMBER

It will appear as so:

@Groddil

You can also type:

[member=MEMBER NO.]WHATEVER[/member]
For example...

@Groddy Groddy Grod Grod Groddil

Finally, clicking a mention will send you to the mentioned member's profile.

Hickory

Not to add extra posts, but it's worth noting that to get the actual link to a post in a quote, you have to enter a complicated string of numbers and additional code, which is easily done by pressing the button.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Administrator's Note: Post attachments have been disallowed on this forum for some years. However, this guide has been retained for history's sake.
Attachments
Attachments

If you want to attach an image or file from your computer, rather than uploading it to a file sharing site first, you can easily accomplish this by clicking on "Attachments and other options," which is underneath the post field. Next, click choose file and select what you want to attach. You can attach up to 4 attachments per post [done by clicking (more attachments)], but the size of the attachments (both individually and combined) cannot exceed 192 KB.

Keep in mind that only .doc .gif .jpg .mpg .pdf .png .txt and .zip files are supported attachments.

Attachments can be found at the bottom of your post. Check the bottom of this post for an example.

Inserting videos

If you want to actually have a video in your post, rather than a link to one, you can use a [youtube][/youtube] tag. This functions similarly to the url tags; just put the url of the youtube video in between the two tags, and you should have a video in your post.

Notifying replies

If you want to keep up to date on a specific thread,you can set it to send you email notifcications whenever someone posts. You can do this by either clicking "Notify," next to the post button, or by clicking "Attachments and other options" and ticking the "Notify me of replies" checkbox.

"Me" actions.

There is a special tag that allows you to post "X does Y" actions, such as

* Groddil eats a cookie.

You can do this in one of two ways:

Firstly, you can type:

/.me WHATEVER (without the "."). This will put a sentence in red like so:

* YOUR USERNAME does something

If you want to replace your username with something else, you can use a tag.

[me=NAME]WHATEVER[/me]
For example, if you wanted to call yourself "Groddy", or another such nickname, just type this:

[me=Groddy]dances a jig.[/me]
The end result would be another sentence:

* Groddy dances a jig.
