Cercio pulled his staff back as the blow connected. He did not allow himself time to congratulate himself in a successful attack. He had to keep moving if he was to keep out of range of the ferret's seeking blade.

An attack came in, aimed to strike right through his body, shoulder to footpaw. Cercio stepped back just in time to miss the blade. It came within an inch of his footpaw. The squirrel stabbed forward with his staff, hoping to connect with the ferret's sword arm.

The staff did make contact. Blood dripped freely from his arm, adding to the blood which was already all over his body. He was rapidly losing concioussness as he lost blood.

Desperately, he made a feeble swing at the squirrel at waist height. The swing was too much for him and he dropped he sword and fell to his knees, watching to see if he had done any damage at all.

Cercio dodged the feeble swing and as the ferret dropped to his knees the squirrel swung his staff. It connected with the warlord's head, slaying him instantly.

The squirrel nursed his wounds, standing slowly to take stock of his surroundings. It was then that he saw the vermin horde closing in around him...
