The sting of winter had just begun to touch Redwall Abbey's orchard. Small gusts of icy wind played fitfully about trees and shrubs. Small dustings of snow had begun to build up in various nooks and crannies. The last of the season's fruits hung grimly onto branches that were ready to shed their burden. Late russet apples, new winter pears, a few pawfuls of blackberries, and some over ripe damsons, were all that was left of Autumn's harvest.

It was twilight, the last birds of the day sang their evening songs. Stars were beginning to glitter in the sky as it changed from hues of orange and red to the deep blue black of night. Sconces baring torches had been set at various intervals between the trees to light the dueling field. Their flames guttered and flickered and cold winds caused them to dance. Contestants were to pit their skills against each other in these famed orchards. Weaving among trees, using wheelbarrows as possible blockades, and maybe even taking advantage of the fruits of the season or snow in their attacks. This would be a battle to remember.

A judging booth containing three otters bundled for cold weather was set up to one side of the orchard with a good view of the scene. A shout rebounded off the red sandstone walls of the famed abbey of Redwall.

"Mokkan the Marlfox versus Danflower Reguba! Ready, begin!"

OOC: In order to make this match move along this is what will happen:

You will both start with your characters facing each other on open ground in the middle of the orchard. From here you can move your characters where ever you wish. If there is not IC movement from your characters in the next 24 hours, I will lock this thread.

Sorry to take this tact, but this thread is becoming difficult to monitor. please just RP your characters into positions you feel comfortable with.

Do not make any more OOC comments in this thread. If you want to send me or Lutra a PM feel free to do so.

Dannflower Reguba

"How many times do we have to kill the same stinking foxes!" Thought Danflor quite moodily, "Well, might as well get this over with." He crack shot a cold, rotten russet at Mokkan, and darted to then up the tree whence it came calling after, "In the name and spirit of Redwall I simply can't give you a cold shoulder.... I guess over-enthusiastic hospitality will do in its place!" The thing was started... Hopefully they'd be done by tea time.

OOC: For judging.

Mokkan raised his axe defensively and just managed to deflect the projectile. He gave an annoyed snarl as his opponent ran up a tree. These squirrels always had to climb into trees. Now he was probably going to start chucking more apples at him. Just great, he thought. The only things that would get him out of that tree would either be a well aimed blow by an apple, or for the squirrel to climb back down the tree. As he hadn't brought a sling with him, option number one was out of the question. So that left option two. And he was not going up there after him.

"So why don't you come down from there and fight, or are ye just a coward?". He raised his axe. "Or, are you just going to leave me here to chop down your precious Abbey's orchard trees? I guess I'll just have to start chopping then. Feel free to drop in anytime!" He gave a laugh that was thick with malice. He would chop down every tree in this orchard if he had to. The squirrel would come down eventually. These Redwallers loved their precious Abbey. They would hate to see their Abbey damaged in any way. He'd come down.

"Is that the best idea you could possibly come up with?" Martin's blade came jabbing out of the trees at Mokkan stopping just short of his face, "And I thought Marlfox's were supposed to be smart.... too bad the brains skipped over you." Dannflower dropped from the trees right in front of the fox, "You seem to fear me being in the trees, I thought you were supposed to fearLESS, not fearFUL." The squirrel swung nonchalantly, left-to-right, shoulder-to-waist at his foe.

Mokkan jumped away before the blade stopped short of his face. "And you speak about fear." He sneered. What's the matter? The image of how ye failed the whole abbey still too fresh in your mind? How ye were cracking nuts while my kin stole the tapestry of that Martin the Warrior that ye were supposed to be guarding?" He blocked his opponent's bloes. "I wouldn't blame you. After all, you failed everyone. You failed the abbey. You failed your friends. And more importantly, you failed your father. You failed your family. You brought shame to the name of Reguba. But I wouldn't blame you. Your're just a cowardly little babe. Just a frightened little squirrel!" His comments hung on the brisk winter air. He raised his axe. "Just a frightened little squirrel, playing with swords." He swiftly attacked with several blows of his axe.

The verbal jabs hurt, they reflected how he had felt before, and Mokkan was opening old wounds... But he had some major flaws in his mental warfare, "You call me a coward, yet YOU were the one that stayed at the back of the fighting force the night your own made a daring attack, YOU were the one that could only manage his own sister by a push in the back." Dannflower didn't like this fox at all, and flicking an Axe blade away time and again like this was getting boring, "Failure is the way to succes, you never learn if you always win.... Which is were your kind went wrong. You bullied those who couldn't do a thing against you, so when you came across those willing and able... You stood no chance." He waited for an opening, and hauled it in, the opening being a slightly longer hang-time between axe swings. He rushed his opponent, sword ready to counter an axe blow, "As for my name, I personally escorted that tapestry back after the defeat of your kind," he sniffed at Mokkan, "If you call that shame, I don't want whatever you call honor, I shall always stand in your way, I shall always be the frontal guard against you and your evil habits, and I shall never accept anything short of a necessary victory... Redwall is far too important for fatal error... Long live the goodbeasts of Redwall Abbey!"

"You only rescued it because ye met no resistance." he responded. "And ye would know all about fatal error, wouldn't you? And ye won't be living long, either!" He blocked his opponent's attacks, and then returned some strikes of his own. This wet-behind-the-ears squirrel was just another beast who happened to have some good abilities. Too bad for him that he didn't have the experience to boot.

"No resistance? HA! You have no clue who all we met along the way just to get to your rotten 'ole home! Its no wonder you beasts have such bad attitudes, living in a place such as that!" Danflor received a knick on the fingers as he didn't quite pull his hand back enough... No matter, he still had Mokkan on the defensive, his talking was getting defensive, and desperate, the fox had already used most of his ammunition, "I intend to live for quite some time after this. I still haven't gotten around to... um.... I don't think I'm going to tell you that one, you don't deserve to know." He thust forward violently... Strange, as such an aggressive attack was against his nature, "I have yet to make an error that cost another their life, what would you know about the errors I make any way? You must be too  busy cataloging your own!"

OOC: For Judging... BTW, the thing that he didn't tell Mokkan was that he was going to ask Song Breeze THE question shortly after the Tourny......  ;)

OOC: Ok this is getting to be more of a duel of words than a duel of swords...

Mokkan blocked the blow and returned one of his own. This squirrel seemed to have a mouth that wouldn't close. He might just have to close it himself. He brought his axe down, but, just at the last second, stopped in mid-strike, paused, and then brought it down to finish the attack.
