Hey everyone,

I thought I'd play ambassador for Redwall MUCK (http://rwmuck.limitless.org/rwmuck/), as I noticed a few posts throughout the boards talking about the difficulty of getting started on RWMuck. It can be, but the results are rewarding, and only more so if more players join!

What's a MUCK? A multi-user chat kingdom. But what does that really mean? It's a chat world, basically! A live chat made up of many different rooms that are connected, and populated by players and their alts.

Why Redwall MUCK? There are many vibrant roleplay forums out there, but not many options (beyond small chatrooms or AIM and the like) that allow you a real-time roleplay environment. Redwall MUCK does! When you "pose" (like you'd post on a forum), you do so with the other players are standing right there, and can answer you within moments. The Redwall MUCK community is also incredibly diverse, featuring players of all ages and levels of ability, and all are made welcome.

Is it hard to get started? It can seem difficult to get started on a MUCK, especially if you are not familiar with the MUD or MUCK commands. Fortunately, there are some great references out there (see the bottom of this post for a short command guide), like Redwall MUCK's list of beginner guides: http://rwmuck.limitless.org/rwmuck/category/help-pages/beginners-guides.

How do I connect? You can use any MUCK client, but you don't need one. This link will get you connected right away: http://rwmuck.limitless.org/swf/rw_client.swf

Who can help me? Almost everybody on RWMuck is usually willing to help a new player get started, though Ajax is the official helper. You can also ask me (Latna) for help whenever you want.

Some basic commands:
For commands on a MUCK, you don't need any prefixes or anything usually, so don't worry about stuff like "/me" or brackets or anything right now.

page <name> = <whatever> -- This is the basic message command you can use to get a hold of any player in the game, regardless of where they are. So if you typed page Latna = Help me! I would get a message to the effect of Newplayer pages you, "Help me!" This is the best way to get a hold of someone when you need help. =)

whisper <name> = <whatever> -- This command is similar to page, but only works if the person named is in the same room as you. It can be used in character or out of character. Example: I type, whisper Jimbob = The otters strike at midnight!, and Jimbob sees on his screen, Latna whispers, "The otters strike at midnight!" to you.

say <whatever> -- This command is used In-Character (IC) to make your character speak. E.g. I type say I feel like dancing willynilly. and the result is Latna says, "I feel like dancing willynilly."

pose <whatever> -- To make an action, such as "Latna dances willynilly," you use the pose command. You can also type :<whatever> to create the same effect. It's smart, so typing :'s dancing willynilly would result in Latna's dancing willynilly rather than Latna 's dancing....

+set -- This command lists all the things you can +set to help describe your character. It gives you an in-game explanation of how it is used.

look <name> -- This is how you see the descriptions other players have set for themselves. If you were to look Latna then you'd see something like, "The old mouse's eyes glitter madly. His sandals are scuffed from all his willynilly dancing." Typing look without a name will describe the room you're standing in!

rp <whatever> -- A "room-page" is the OOC chat you use for a local room. For example, if I were to type, rp Anyone up for RP?, the result would be "Latna room-pages, "Anyone up for RP?" -- This is understood to be OOC. =)

who and where -- Trying to figure out if any players are on? The commands who and where are both handy. If you type who, it will display a list of players and how long they've been on for. If you type where, it will display a list of players, as well as their locations in the world. Sometimes the locations aren't obvious (FV=Ferravale, for example), but after some exploring one learns to recognize the locations better.

ws -- Short for who-species (or something like that), if you type ws it will list for you the players who are in a room with you, their species, ages, and how long since they've last been active.

Look for commands in brackets Many commands you can use you will find in brackets in the room descriptions. For example, if you wanted to leave a room, you would first look at the description: "This room is empty, except for four doors. [NORTH] [SOUTH] [EAST] [WEST]" To move, you'd simply type north or one of the other three directions. If you have trouble, just page someone!

Those basic commands should be all you need to get started roleplaying on RWMuck. It can seem intimidating at first, but no need to be! Roleplayers of all abilities get along side by side on the MUCK, so don't let unfamiliarity trip you up. =) And you know that forum character you've been developing all this time? It's probably a perfect fit! Go! Play! Discover!

If you need any additional help, please feel free to pm me on here, or page me on RWMuck whenever you want. (You can also leave me a message on the MUCK by typing page #mail Latna = <yourmessagehere>.) Hope to see you soon!

The link I gave to connect to the server may not work with all versions of Flash. If you're having trouble connecting, you can try this embedded client through The MUD Connector, too: http://www.mudconnect.com/fmud/?host=redwall.realm.limitless.org&port=4203

When you log on for the first time, you'll just need to type connect male guest or connect female guest, rather than selecting a button as you would with the other client.

P.S. As a guest, you can explore the whole world and watch RP and such. =)

P.P.S We already have several new players from the forums!

Those who stand before us light the night sky with flame

When I saw this thread I decided to try the MUCK and now I really enjoy it. On there I am Kacela, Lakelyn, Jafari, and Valda plus Dalit & Saar who I don't use very much. Thanks to Shogg, Latna, and all the other helpful people on there for all the help they have given me.
