Yea, you would think that creatures would visit it in later Redwall books! Why didn't they?

Life is too short to rush through it.

What need was there to visit the tomb regularly if Martin's spirit called on creatures when it was necessary?  Nobody had to personally seek Martin's tomb out save for Matthias, again part of it written because at the time it was only supposed to be one story.  As to why nobody knew about the tomb, well, like lots of things, you don't always know where they are unless they're well documented, and it doesn't seem that Redwall came with a set of blueprints! ;)  Matthias was meant to find it because Martin's spirit told him where he was resting.  The fact that nobody remembers it exists is because it was never meant to be written down in the abbey books, and thus anyone who was alive eventually passed on, and with it, the location of where Martin was truly buried.

-Sometime later, the second mate was unexpectedly rescued by the subplot, which had been trailing a bit behind the boat (and the plot). The whole story moved along.
