Did Brian sit with someone and help design the maps at the begining of the books? I'm just wondering.

Who did the illustrations? Just one person, or did he have an illustrator assigned to each book?

He had two illustrators, one for the U.S. one for the U.K.

Those were the cover illustrators.  I'm not positive if the cover illustrators were the same ones responsible for the maps inside.

I'm not going to pull out every Redwall book to check this, but my copy of Taggerung has the cover illustrated by Troy Howell (he did all the U.S. covers) and the illustrations are done by Peter Standley.  My guess is Standley drew the maps.  If he is the cover illustrator for the U.K. editions, then it may be correct for the U.K. editions of the books and there is one illustrator.  I don't think its so for the U.S. ones. ;)

Brian Jacques said he sketched up the maps himself-but the actual ones in the books were professionally done, off of his original ones.
Tomorrow morning, I'll reference the Ask Brian question/answer about this.

ToR is right, here's the Ask Brian question he was referring to:
Quote from: Ask Brian
73. Do you draw the maps that are in the front of your books yourself, or do you tell the artist what to draw? (Nuala McCullagh, Chicago, Illinois)

Yes, I draw them in brief, and then the artist redraws the beautiful ones which appear at the front of the books. Incidentally a full Redwall map including all places in all the stories so far is being produced as a poster this year to celebrate the tenth anniversay of publication.

Also, if you go to the page for each book on the Redwall wiki it lists the illustrators for that book. Here's the page for Redwall to get you started. The only books where the illustrator and the (UK) cover artist were the same are Marlfox, The Legend of Luke and Lord Brocktree.

It's also my guess that the illustrators are the ones who draw the maps.
