The dirgecallers

I thought that the dirgecallers in bellmaker were interesting being that they were ermine and that they were insane from being in captivity instead of other reasons.

It was a bit confusing how they got to that point, perhaps from captivity, but maybe they had other things done to them.
I'm curious why all of them were female.

It's a bit like eunuch guards in history. I suppose Urgan Nagru? had his reasons to have a fully female bodyguard.
