Chapter Summaries of A Realm Reborn

Chapter 1: Prologue I
PoV: Egil Skulason
The chapter begins with an otter and a weasel racing up a flight of stairs. As they reach the room in which their friend Thordan (also an otter) is held, Alfyn the otter tries to fight his way through his six guards, but Egil the weasel tricks his way in by convincing five guards to leave, then bribing the last one, a hedgehog named Bertil, to leave. The pair cut Thordan loose and rush back down.
PoV: Denebas Burelas
Meanwhile, two squirrels, a pair of Trielian brothers, have sneaked into the armoury of the castle, where they see the five guards from before preparing to take on Thordan's grandfather, another Thordan. Bertil rushes back into the room, quickly pursued by a spear-wielding otter. Aided by the brothers, Altayras and Denebas Burelas, the otter defeats three guards, forcing the other two to flee, and leaving Bertil a prisoner. While interrogating the hedgehog, the otter reveals that he is Erlend Swalestrom, Thordan's father, and quickly intimidates Bertil to give him the whereabouts of his son, and that he has now been freed by an otter and a weasel, which disgusts the brothers due to their distaste for vermin - a trait shared by all Trielians. The trio quickly decide to search for him anyways.

Chapter 2: Prologue II
PoV: Thordan Swalestrom
Thordan and his rescuers run down the stairs, only to meet two guards fleeing from the armoury. Alfyn and Egil quickly finish them off, and Thordan is reunited with his father. Although Erlend was happy to see his son, Thordan was quite annoyed about the fact that his father almost sent his to his death. The group now attempts to search for Lord Canute Crestworth, the lord who imprisoned Thordan.
PoV: Isangrim Pallpelt
Isangrim struggles against a guardsbeast who is finally killed by Lorelei Skyward, Thordan's mother. Her father, also named Thordan, watches and explains the situation before endeavoring to search for the younger Thordan. The trio run into Canute, who wastes his time trying to taunt them until the group from before charged in. After a brief struggle, Canute's guards are all killed before he springs a trap by knocking Altayras to the ground. He is fatally stabbed by Denebas before he could end the downed squirrel for good.

Chapter 3: Fracture
PoV: Garrion Swalestrom
The Lords of Southsward have just heard of the events at Raevsvakt, and nobody in attendance were happy. Garrion moans about not sending help to Canute until it was too late, but is quickly silenced by his father Becker, who thinks that it would lead to war with Parma, jeopardising their plans. Becker then orders Garrion to defend the forts near Floret (the capital of Southsward), while he will be off on a diplomatic mission.
PoV: Ralos Farin
Ralos receives an invitation to a secret meeting by King Gideon of Southsward. On his way there, he reminisces about his previous campaigns, including one in which they fought in Mossflower against the Kingdom of Greymorg. Finally arriving, Ralos meets with Becker, who exchanges pleasantries with him. Their small talk was quickly interrupted by King Gideon, who announces that King Thordan of Parma is dead. The trio then move on to discuss their conflict with Triel, and decide that they will not be the ones who will start the looming conflict - both sides want war.

Chapter 4: Weight of a Whisper
PoV: Egil Skulason
Egil introduces the chapter by musing about Young Thordan's emotional breakdown after his grandfather's passing. He recalls that Thordan used to be the lively one of the pair, but things have obviously changed now. Making his way to the aviary to send a letter to his father, Egil happens upon Lorelei, now Queen of Garlesca, and she orders him to tell Thordan that he must return to Meraholmer now. Intimidated, Egil hurries along the corridors.
PoV: Isangrim Pallpelt
Isangrim meets with Niels Crestworth, a brother of Canute that was raised by the elder Thordan (and also has feelings for Lorelei). Niels has been appointed Royal Vicar of Parma by Thordan's will, but he has no idea how to use this power. The two then discuss the succession to the Parman throne - the Parmans have a long tradition of electing their kings. Isangrim lists out a few candidates, including Erlend Swalestrom, which are quickly rejected by Niels. Erlend has too much power outside Parma, and having him as king will lead to war with  Southsward. After Niels leaves, Isangrim smugly notes that Lorelei will get what she wants - and 'it is etched'.
