Just because some editions say that they work as standalones, doesn't mean they do (I've found that most of them come in pairs).

If one is breaking into a new series, the beginning doesn't often keep the interest. I've read quite a few RAs, and I tended to skip to the middle, and read the beginning after I finished the book.

That sounds like it could be confusing. The beginning is often very important (Ruins of Gorlan and The Royal Ranger are key examples of that).

It's like walking into a room in the middle of a conversation. Because you have no idea what is going on, you listen intently. then at the end you ask how it all started.

If you think that isn't a good way to read books...... Yeah, you're probably right.
