What they did is they took a grown man who was missing a limb, gave him a new, awesome replacement, then lobotomized him.

It's not so much that they're changing stuff. . . It's that they're saying that literal decades of lore and stories are now "legends". In my opinion, there's no reason why most of the old material can't still be canon.
That said, a lot of the comics that are coming out are pretty good, and they have been putting stuff into canon that was in legends.
