Kidnap is a strange word. A lot of adults get kidnapped (usually in books), but they aren't kids. And "nap" has almost nothing to do with being stolen away, unless you are asleep when it happens.

The characters aren't necessarily bad characters. Just, in every single scene in Mattimeo, they are being spoiled brats.
