I guess that even when a pawn is promoted in exchange, it'll usually just be turned on its side and count as a pawn when taken.

How do you play chess, anyway? It's super hard.

It isn't that hard, once you learn (then again I've been playing since I was around four).

Spoiler
White moves first.

Pawns (you know, the small pieces) can move forward two on their first move, otherwise one. They take one square forward diagonally. If they reach the end of the board, they can become a queen, rook, knight or bishop.

Knights (horse shaped pieces) move in an L shape (two squares in one direction, one square in another). They can jump over other pieces.

Bishops move diagonally.

Rooks (castle shaped) move straight.

Queens (tallest piece except for the king) move diagonally or straight.

Kings (have a cross on top) can go one square in any direction.

Castling can be done when neither the king nor the rook has moved, as long as you aren't in check, going through check, or going into check.

Check is when the king is attacked. They have to move out of it (by moving, or a piece taking the piece checking, or blocking) and it is illegal to move into it. Checkmate is when the king is in check and cannot get out. Stalemate is when the player whose move it is cannot move anywhere.

That's pretty much it.

Then you just simply learn and memorize every move and play known to humans, and then try and come up with some of your own!

You cannot feasibly learn much beyond theory for common openings. And you could always play a move out of theory that isn't necessarily the best move but your opponent (if they learn openings) might not know how to play against it.

Or just be good at middlegames and endgames.

You forgot to mention that pawns can only kill diagonally.

When she said "they take one square forward diagonally", that's what she meant.

Pfft, nevermind.

Reports say Evie loves playing Chess, as does Sheev. Mayhap they should do it together.

Then I'd just invade and make it three way chess. That or help one of them.

Ooh I think that is a great idea!

We should do the whole wedding theme as chess! The bridesmaids and groomsmen could all bring their best armor!

Booklover

So... have the bride and groom dressed as a king and queen. The priest can dress as a bishop. But what'll everyone else be?

The cake can be a chess cake, as well.

The common wedding guests are pawns. Bridesmaids can be rooks and groomsmen can be knights.
