He's writing a book, and book writers like to have someone around to take out their anger on, when they've got writer's block. I'm speaking from experience, being a book writer myself.

Also if they've got seven gun batteries that fire thrice, it would be 42 instead of 21. Because all the noise that the gun batteries make, counts as two firings each, because I can't tell the difference between six firings or three. And according to Booklover, 42 is the meaning of life.
