When you lose all your hit points (hp), your life bar so to speak, you go down.  At that point, you roll a 20 sided die (a d20) to make death "saving throws" to see whether you bleed out and die or stop bleeding and merely fall into a state of unconsciousness.  The higher you roll, the better, but if you roll a 20 on the die, that's called a "natural 20", or a nat 20.  At that point, it's considered a critical success, and instead of stabilizing but staying unconscious, you instead come back to consciousness with 1hp and are able to do stuff again.  These are the rules as they are in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, or 5e for short.
