His parents got killed, he got separated from his family at birth, his stepdaughter ran away (and was perceived by him as disliking of him) and he died just as he was about to be reunited with his family.
IMO that sort of completely destroys Rose's death in terms of sadness.

Which makez ye think o' ha' her parentz felt when everyone but her returned home tae Noonvale. Firzt zhe came home without Brome, an' then Brome returned home without her.

I wonder if Rose's parents always hated Martin after that because they didn't want Rose to go with Martin and Martin said he would protect her. Then he never even saw them again

It was amusing how at the end of Season 3, fans could be heard screaming "What about Rose's parents!?" The book never explained if, how, or when the parents were told Rose was never coming back. The TV series neglected it as well. Presumably Brome gave the news, or anyone else who eventually returned to Noonvale, but really it probably would have sounded best coming from Martin. At least then they could have seen the look in Martin's eyes and know he was truly sorry for it (despite being out of his control).

I don't think the parents ever hated Martin though. It wouldn't have been in his nature to intentionally kill her, and the parents noted with regret that it was Rose's decision to follow Martin and thus be put in that situation.

...sigh... that would have been the only thing that could make the TV series ending better, Martin meeting Rose's parents again and saying he was sorry.

Agreed. My saddest part was...Skalrag's death in the TV series. Embarassing ending for my favorite character...

The bit that almost made me cry is when they're burying Mellus, and Blaggut throws over the badger cup and says, 'Take it and live long in peace.' That brought tears to my eyes.

After Cregga died, I was so sad that I couldn't enjoy Rukky Garge properly.
But sometimes you have to let old people die, because it might be harder for them to live.

I reread that bit in the Taggerung, and I was crying inside, but I didn't cry physically.

I think the saddest moments to me were: (Spoiler*)

When Russa Nodrey died.
When Rose of Noonvale died.
When Rockjaw Grang died.
When Warbeak died.

And a few others. I never really cry, but I am always crying on the inside.

Russa Nodrey, Rockjaw Grang, Queen Warbeak, and Finnbar Galedeep. Those are some of the saddest deaths for me. But I litarally cried when Ranguvar Foeseeker died. Seriously, I cried. I physically cried.

In terms of actual sadness, I agree with most of you guys. Sarabando and Bragoon, Rose, Urthstripe, Mother Mellus, Finbarr and Fatch, etc. However, the death that effected me the most was at the beginning of Mattimeo (the first Redwall book I read. Well, actually my Dad read it to me.) when Slagar runs one of his minions through and then callously remarks, "Take him outside to die. We don't want his blood in here." That really shocked me. (being a rather innocent....nine year old?) And after Warbeak died, I started wondering if Matthias was going to die, since the book was Mattimeo, not Matthias.

I felt sad about the original High Rhulain dying, even though there wasn't very much about it.

I reckon I would have really cried if there had been.

And I only really feel sad when the death is dwelt on. THE LEGEND OF LUKE SPOILER With Ranguvar, we don't even know if she did die. For all we know, she might have washed up on some far shore and lived out her days. ~~peacefully.~~ I don't feel sad when I read that part of TLOL, I feel cheated.
