I would call Australasia the geographic region, much like Eurasia. Australia is large enough to be considered its own continent, but New Zealand is not. While it could geographicallu be considered part of Australia, saying so would cause confusion, as NZ is a separate entity. Much like America and Cuba. Cuba is close enough to the continent to be geographically considered a part of it,  but due to its separate government, it is not.

He didn't say that NZ didn't have a separate government.  He said that the situation between NZ and Australia is similar to the one between Cuba and the U.S. since, in both situations, they are geographically close, but have separate governments.
