"I'm coming. I have a score to settle."

The black hare nodded curtly to the vole's response. She had no qualms with having another beast like Daniel help find the foxes and pay them back. Besides, if anybeast deserved to give the fox band what for it was the vole.

"Aye, that you do Daniel."

"Marm permission to scout ahead in search of these bally foxes wot."

At first the General would have said no. A new recruit had no business scouting ahead on their first run out of the mountain. But then she reconsidered. So far the recruits had shown what it took to be Long Patrollers in the making.

"Sergeant Longblade!" She watched, knowing the Sergeant would come quickly to attention. "I want you to take Menzy and Phireem here with you. Scout ahead of the main group and come back as soon as you spot the blighters we are after wot!"

She turned to the others. "The rest of you keep in rank and follow me and Wildpaw on the double. Keep your voices down and weapons at the ready. It shouldn't be too long before we come across those foxes."

About three miles to the east Bilgen squatted in front of a small fire. He was toasting an apple on a stick. The red fox gave a snickering laugh and he turned the apple. Yeuwl, a gray fox sat on the other side of the fire. He was heating a scone. All the food was stolen from the vole.

"Bilgen, Yeuwl!"

"Yes, chief!" The two chorused as a hulking brute of a fox came onto the scene.

"You best have my vittles cooked up nice fer me yew worthless flea bags!" The gray fox toyed with the handle of a skinning knife as he spoke.

"Aye chief!" The two knew what would happen if they argued. They had not been planning on giving the food to Tirzen. But now they were.

Tirzen Bladeclaw was the chief of about fifteen foxes. He lounged by the fire and bite into a roasted apple. His white teeth flashed in a wolfish grin as he thought of the beast who had "given" them such a lovely meal.

OOC: You can play any of the foxes you wish during your posts.

Kodlak jumped up as the General called him, he stood to attention as Haley told him his orders. Kodlak saluted smartly and called 'Menzy!Phireem! Pack up your belongings and follow me ' Kodlak informed the two recruits of what they were too do then he set off at a steady jog in the direction of the vole's house, Kodlak turned only to check the others were keeping up with him. As they reached a sandy hill Kodlak sat down no it and adjusted his footpaw bands they were in a bad condition from being torn on the small stones and he checked his haversack to see if thee were any more, he spent a moment rumaging through his haversack and sighed as there were none left.
Kodlak motioned the recruits too sit down and said in a commanding voice 'We'll stay here for a moment too regain our breath then we can set off.' The sun beat unmercifully down on them, Kodlak wiped a paw across his brow and watched Menzy and Phireem making sure they would b ready too start at a moments notice.

Breathing heavily, Phireem sat on a rock but kept his pack on, his thoughts still racing. Here he was, a brand new recruit, and yet he was asked to go on a scouting mission with the sergeant and Menzy! Questions zoomed through his head as he turned his gaze over the blue sea with white-flecked foam, yet his face belied the many thoughts he had, making him appear confident in this situation.
What would be next?
When would they find the foxes?
What strength would their numbers be?
Would they have to fight? If so, would they win?
He felt confident in his skills as a swords-hare. Pawing the hilt of his rapier, he glanced in the direction they were going. No sign of the foxes yet. He thought of the poor vole that had been robbed by the foxes. For Phireem, that added extra incentive to fight. Wasn't that the whole reason the Long Patrol was there, to protect the western coast? Aye, he thought. Those bally foxes have got a price to pay.
Glancing first at Menzy, then at Sergeant Kodlak. After watching them duel, he was certain that they would be perfectly fine. He was just slightly disappointed that he hadn't acted fast enough to get into that duel. He sighed quietly and stood up again, his breath now regained and his strength refreshed. He watched nothing in particular as he waited for Kodlak's next orders.

OOC: I would like this post to be judged.

"Keep your voices down and weapons at the ready," the General had said. A moments silence! What a relief it was to Wildpaw's exhausted senses. As he march in line, he called out to the recruits every now and then. "I say, June, marm, keep in line. Fay, on the double, we're still marching not running."

Wildpaw tried to focus on the tack at hand, a band of foxes. The young soon-to-be patrol hares had no idea what a true fight was. Foxes were sneaky creatures, and would play dirty if it meant winning. But as perilous as their predicament was, Wildpaw's thoughts wandered.

He had tried for the past few days to figure out why he was so weary. He had come to the conclusion it was because of his lack of sleep. He remembered laying awake for hours at night. For some reason, he couldn't sleep.

He was pulled back into the present. "Come one, chaps, left, right, left, right."

Near the fox camp sat a lone fox in a cloak that matched the sand making it hard for him to be seen by the naked eye. He watched them as the biggest fox dishes out orders. Now you would think being a fox he would be wanting to welcome his fellows but he looked app on them with a unhappy look.

He had fought and done his misdeeds and paid the price for them much over he changed his ways and became this areas healer. Redwall Abby was to far for some to get to so he took it soon him self to healed the sick here if they needed. He sat and watched he will wait the long patrol will come soon and he will help.

Meanwhile.....

Menzy looked over to Phireem who was breathing hard and smiled. "I say chap you allright that run didn't take the wind out of your sail did it?" She nudges him as she sniffs the air then her ear went flat in the direction of the campfire and in a calm voice. "Sargent they are this way." She pointed further down the beach and picks up her javelin.

OOC: This is my fox if you want his bio pm me. Judge if you like.

Frowning, Phireem crossed his arms over his chest. "I'm blinkin' well fine." He winked, then looked in the direction Menzy had said the foxes were. "How far away do you think they are?"

RatBane

She raises one ear and listens just a bit her grip tightened on her javelin an sniffs the air and her ear lowers and she moves just to where she can see a bit better.

"I say those blighters are at least 2 maybe 3 dunes away but we are not the only chaps tracking these sods wot wot."

She waves Phireen next her along with the Sargent.

"Do you see? Just watch the sand there." She points out the slight discolor and the hint of silver on the dune.

Colour Sergeant Longblade ignored the recruits and said 'Now chaps, if you were those foxes where would you rather stay? on the sand where your exposed to rain and such or in mossflower where the trees give shelter?' Kodlak left it at that and swiftly made his way to where Menzy had pointed. Kodlak returned as swiftly as he had left and spoke calmly 'No need to get yourselves excited wot! It was an abandend camp , just a dead fox and a campfire that was put out, that silver you saw will 'ave been the foxes silver dager.' Kodlak Longblade unsheathed his weapon and rubbed the ashes of the fire on it grudgingly 'We'll take are weapons out from now on in case we bump into those vemrin chaps. And make sure you scallwags rub ashes on your blade to stop the sun from shining off them' Kodlak set off at a crouch and kept his ears down.

Icefire

As Dawnflower marched, she occasionally glanced at Sergeant Wildpaw. "He doesn't look so good." She thought, "What are we going to do if one of our officers is already starting to go down? And what if something happens to the scouts? What if..." Then she stopped short and almost had Fay run into her. "Sorry!" She said as she quickened her pace and started mentally berating herself, "What if? Who cares about 'What if'? We're Long Patrol Hares! The whole reason we're here is to fight to protect those who cannot protect themselves! That's a messy business. You knew that when you signed up! It doesn't matter if you might get wounded or killed as long as you do what you know is right."
With that thought, she straightened and a look of grim determination shone in her eyes.
Living in peace, aye many a season,
Calm in life and sound in reason,,
'Til evil arrives, a wicked horde,
Driving a warrior to pick up his sword,
The challenger rings then, straight and fair,
Justice is with us, beware. Beware!

The fox that the Sergent thought was dead was listing to his faint words and grind thinking to himself. "I still have it." He continued to sit and watch his dieing fire and stays still till the hares move on continuing to scout out the area from the camp.

Meanwhile...

Menzy followed the Sargent's orders and ashes her weapon to keep the glint off. She looks back the the still figure on the dune.

"Phrieen I am not convince that bally fox is dead I think he is playing possum on us. Do you think it is the phantom healer we heard about that lives around here? I heard there is some creature that has been healing others of this area if they cant make it to redwall or to far from themountain for proper help. What you think?"

Phireem, having finished blackening his weapon, listened to what Menzy had to say. Digesting the information, he gave his opinion. "It's bally possible. That fox does fit pretty well with what I've heard. But why would a phantom healer appear dead? Doesn't make a whole flippin' lot of sense, unless it's afraid of us. I guess that's just how it works, if it is really that fox."
He ran one paw across one of the orange jagged stripes along one arm. "And I must say, that fox must be a pretty blinkin' good pretender to fool Sergeant Longblade into thinking it's dead. Unless, of course, it really is dead." the recruit sighed. "I can't tell one bloomin' way or the other if it was what you say it was or not."
OOC: I would like this post to be judged please.

Fay could barely contain the excitement as she tried to keep in time with the rest of the Long Patrol. She was extremely alert and ready for action at any moment.

In her mind she was thinking sternly to herself, C'mon me old gel, you can keep in time! Left, right, left, right. Her thoughts had now turned to concerns as she saw some worried looks on faces, We don't have that many numbers and we aren't trained fighters.

To enlighten the mood she whispered to her comrades around her, "C'mon, chaps and chapnesses, we don't want it to flippen rain do we? We want to look like Long Patrolers not like an old warty toad!"

OOC: may i have this post judged please?
Fun. is a fantastic band.

Redwall Musician

"Fay, m'gel, good way of looking at things," Wildpaw said. He could tell that by her face she was slightly worried. After all, there was not many of them, nine total, six young ones and three officers. Only six were here right now, as Longblade, Menzy and Phireem had gone ahead.

Wildpaw whispered to the General in a voice hardly audible. "Marm, if I may say, are you sure you want to go out to fight these foxes with the young 'uns here? Never been in a real fight before. And so few of 'em. Not the safest plan, wot!"

"Marm, if I may say, are you sure you want to go out to fight these foxes with the young 'uns here? Never been in a real fight before. And so few of 'em. Not the safest plan, wot!"

Haley nodded and kept moving. She smiled slightly as she sized up the situation in her mind.

"No sah! I don't intend to let these new recruits into the bally fray wot! Too wet behind the ears for that sort of rot! I see our patrol group up ahead. When we catch up you will stay back with the recruits. Meself and Longblade will go take a closer look about the area. it seems they've spotted something."

The group moved until they had caught up with the patrol. She nodded to Menzy and Phireem.

"You two look like yer preparing fer battle wot! Blackenin' blades and all. Sargeant Longblade?"

She nodded curtly to the hare and spoke. "Care to accompany me to that fox's party? We'll see if we kin get some jolly information from him wot!"
___

OOC: After we communicate with the healer fox, the other foxes will come on the scene. At this point all recruits feel free to post fighting posts wot! This will happen after Kodlak's next post I think. Until then, post about your character not wanting to wait while we talk to the fox. Daniel, you may want your vole to force the issue and come with us. :D

DanielofRedwall

Daniel had kept silent throughout the journey, he was afraid he would say or do something that would lose their respect and, as a result, they might leave him. But he thought he would have to speak up now. He turned to the General. His voice was calmer than he felt as he addressed her. "Marm, please, I am the one the foxes attacked. Surely I might be allowed to fight them, I have a score to settle!" He then stood silently and waited for a response.
Received mostly negative reviews.
