A few suggestions:

  • Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky
  • Watership Down by Richard Adams
  • The Call of the Wild and White Fang by Jack London
  • The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
What!!!?? No "Dragons in our Midst" by Bryan Davis?!

I second the above motion, but not quite so madly.

Wasn't mad. Just very flabbergasted.

What about "Oracles of Fire"!? (Bryan Davis, continuation of his other series)

to me DioM means those four books, Oracles of Fire, and Children of the Bard (series, also continuation; second book currently being written)

Read Where The Red Fern Grows. Oh, I LOVED that book. Then after that, read Shiloh.

Haven't read it, so I can't really suggest it. I never heard of it until you joined the forums.

But so did miss a series from that list. The "Inkheart" trilogy by Cornelia Funke. That'll be good for you Mad Maudie, because it is fantasy and has a bit of romance in it as well.
Received mostly negative reviews.

NO!
I'm sorry! I liked Dragons in our Midst, but once it started getting into Oracles of Fire I started seeing how much he was twisting scripture to fit the story. I'm not even allowed to read them anymore and I'm allowed to read almost anything I want!
Living in peace, aye many a season,
Calm in life and sound in reason,,
'Til evil arrives, a wicked horde,
Driving a warrior to pick up his sword,
The challenger rings then, straight and fair,
Justice is with us, beware. Beware!

That doesn't sound like Bryan (Davis, not Jaques)

@Maudie:

The Underland Chronicles are about a twelve year old boy named Gregor.  He lives in NYC with his mother, grandma, seven year old sister Lizzie and two year old sister Boots.  Their father disappeared under mysterious circumstances.  One day during summer vacation Gregor and Boots fall into a vent in the laundry room and fall down into an underground world.  They are greeted by giant cockroaches and taken to a city of pale underground humans.  The story continues from there.

The main theme is how children are affected by war.  Its an exceptional series and I really enjoyed all of it.  I'm sure you would too being a Redwall fan :)

sounds worthy of a try :)
Cause you are the piece of me I wish I didn't need
Chasing relentlessly and I don't know why
If our love's tragedy why are you my remedy?
If our love's insanity why are you my clarity?
Why are you my clarity?
