I've now seen it twice, once in 2D and once in 3D. I can honestly say 2D was superior IMO. It looked much more crisp in 2D, 3D made everything you weren't supposed to be focusing on a bit blurry (unless that was just my glasses that did that). Also, 3D did little to the film, and gave me a headache. The whole movie looked wonderful, great CGI and beautiful scenery. And the music! The music was fantastic, one of the best parts of the film.

I mentioned Azog on another website, forgot which one. His inclusion was my biggest gripe with the film. In the Appendices, which was what they also drew from, Azog was beheaded during the Battle of Azanulbizar by Dain Ironfoot. So it doesn't make much sense for him to appear alive in the film. I think Jackson was trying to set him up to be another antagonist and for there to be something personal during the Battle of Five Armies (which I expect to feature in the final film). But are any other antagonists really needed? You have the Necromancer (Sauron), Smaug, the Goblin King and Gollum (to an extent) as well as the Orcs who persue them and numerous obsticles. I get that these Orcs would need a leader, I thought they could have made this leader Bolg, Azog's son, who lead the Orcs during the Battle of Five Armies. My other opinions on Azog's appearance is a lot like ToR's as well.

The Riddles scene was amazing. Just the right mix of humour and suspense, I loved that scene. I also loved the escape from the goblins, and the stone giants. The most disappointing scene for me was the wargs in the pine forest, or "Out of the Frying Pan and in to the Fire" as it is called in the book. The inclusion of Azog in this scene really got on my nerves, and Bilbo's little bit of heroism was also a tad annoying (too early for him to be heroic to that extent just yet!). He gained Thorin's trust too early in the grand scheme of things. I agree with ToR, his development was too simple.

The acting was also exceptional. Martin Freeman was fantastic, as always, a great choice of Bilbo. Thorin acted as I expected him to, he was done well. Sir Ian McKellen was faultless as Gandalf (as always), and the dwarves were brilliant. Andy Serkis was also brilliant as Gollum.

So, overall, the film was very good, but with a couple of flaws. It looked fantastic with the 48 FPS and great CGI, the acting was great and the overall film entertaining. However, the book will always be the best, especially because the movie unfortunately deviated a bit from it. So far, I prefer the LOTR films (although there were still a couple of things that got on my nerves from them, but that is for another post).
Received mostly negative reviews.

I personally liked the movie better  :D

BLASPHEMY!!!

But all joking aside, the only things I didn't like were the inclusion of Azog, and how they portrayed Radagast the Brown. Radagast is supposed to be an Istari, one of the Wise. They made him look like a bumbling idiot.

Well I haven't read the book in several years so I don't remember all that was and wasn't in it. IMO it was better than the other Lord of the Rings movies though

AxeHound

I don't know. To me, The Hobbit felt a little cartoon-y. LotR just seemed more real.

Well, no movie can beat the movies based on the Tolkien books.

Romsca

I thought the battles were epic!

I think the movie was a little closer to the books then the LOTR movies were, but I still don't like it as much as the books.

Romsca

Was I the only one that noticed that about half of the dwarves had Scottish accents?

Dawnwing

I go see the movie tonight.  I'm excited!
