Your text reminds me of a TobyMac song.  :P  If I remember correctly, it's even called "Hold On", although I could be mistaken.

And nuttin' much with me; I should probably be in bed right now, but instead I wrote out an entire novel of a character backstory for my friend and now my parents are pretty mad at me for not being upstairs.  :P  Wazzup witchu?

Dunno how calm I am, but at least I'm battling!  :P

As for character backstory, I can just post it if you wanna spend ten minutes reading...

Really long backstory for my OC, Cassius Alethi
OC of the day: Cassius Alethi (shown here with his big sis, Tani)
Cass is a folas (human/elf hybrid), or, more specifically, he's 3/4 human, 1/4 Sasharan elf (Sashar is a country in the east). He used to live in medieval Eliserid, a forested region on the west side of Tir, with his older sister and his parents. Cass led a good life; he was in the second year of magic college (can you tell I don't have a name for that school yet?), and was in high hopes that his skill in destruction magic would lead him to a good career as a battle mage. He even had a girlfriend! She was a sweet dark elf named Atzia who went to the same college as him and was hoping to use her restoration magic abilities to become a healer.

However, this good life of his completely fell apart the day he decided to promise himself to Atzia. They'd been dating almost since they'd met the year before, and Cassius decided that he wanted to be with her for the rest of his life. He asked her if she felt the same, and she said she did, which obviously made him incredibly happy. But there was one thing Atzia said she wanted to do before they would pledge themselves to each other: she wanted to give Cass a special kiss. Thinking, "Whatever, it's probably just a dark elf thing," Cassius agreed. The two embraced, and Atzia planted her lips on her lover's neck. Then he passed out.

Three days later, Cass woke up in a dark cave, his first sight being his love sitting beside him, watching him. He asked what had happened, and why he felt strange, and she explained that she was a vampire from Tas'Valen (a country on a continent south of Tir) who was on the run from hunters. She'd come to Tir looking for someone she could trust to start a brood with, so that she might have protection when the hunters eventually caught up with her. When Atzia met Cassius, she gained his trust through becoming his girlfriend, and made him a vampire so that they could both turn others and form a brood; a safe haven for vampires.

Like any normal person who had just been permanently turned into a monster against their own will, Cassius dumped Atzia right then and there and started trying to figure out what he was going to do for the rest of his immortal life. He couldn't go home; his family would never accept him now. Eventually he decided to follow his dream in becoming a battle mage, only he wasn't an official one; he was merely a mercenary, who had to take even the smallest and dirtiest of tasks just to make a living.

Time passed, and mercenaries fell out of style. But being a sailor was far more common those days, so Cass decided to join the only ship that would take a man like him, no questions asked: Cassius Alethi became a pirate. He was one of three vampires aboard the ship, but he only knew this because they were the only three who always worked during the night and usually worked below deck during the day. They never spoke about their shared trait.

During the long period Cass spent aboard the high seas, he lost his arm to an enemy sailor's blade. He repaid the sailor by tearing his throat out. And that's pretty much the only noteworthy thing to be said about his pirating days.

And now we come to the final point of Cassius' backstory (yes, this novel is almost over): he and his fellow crewmates were on leave in Tas'Valen for a few weeks while the ship was being repaired. Cass had decided to do some sightseeing farther inland, and ended up meandering through a forest one evening. He somehow ended up horribly lost in the woods, and even with his superior vampiric night vision, he couldn't find his way back to civilization. That's when he found it: a dark crack in the trunk of a tree. The crack seemed to be humming with some sort of magic, and Cass couldn't help but be drawn to it. He touched the crack, and immediately it was like a strong gust of wind had blown him right into it. He fell through darkness for what seemed like an eternity, until finally he tumbled out of the tree and into the same forest, only it was midday. It was midday, and the sun didn't hurt him. Even more concerning, the crack in the tree was gone.

Cassius explored for a bit, confused, until he accidentally stumbled upon two female dark elves in old-fashioned tribal clothing gathering berries. Just as he was about to ask where he was, they grabbed weapons and started chasing him, shouting at him in some other language. He ran until he thought he could run no more, but still the two elves were on his tail. Then he saw it: a tree with a large dark crack in it. Without a second thought, he dived head first into the void, and several agonizingly long moments later, he came out of the tree to find himself in the same forest with the tree having no crack in it, but this time the only light came from the full moon above him.

More cautious this time, Cass creeped about, trying to see what new enemy might await him here. What he met was an unnaturally swift human leaping at him and tackling him to the ground. He soon came to realize that this human was a vampire, and that he intended to drain Cassius' blood. After a quick explanation (literally: "STOP! I'M A VAMPIRE! VAMPIRES CAN'T EAT VAMPIRES!"), the human helped Cass up, brought him to another section of the forest, and introduced him to an entire brood of vampires whose only food came from the portal he'd entered from. Since they couldn't eat him, they welcomed him into the brood, explaining to him that this eternally dark forest was but the second realm in a long series of trials one must go through to be able to return to the real world. They warned him not to go looking for the next tree portal, as if he entered into it, he would never be able to return to the safety of the brood. And so Cassius Alethi has spent many centuries in this realm of night, waiting sometimes months for his next meal and contemplating whether or not he should risk the other trials so he can go back to the real world.

Proxy server?
Nah. In the Proxy universe, a "proxy" is like a whipping boy. The proxy system was invented because the government feels like anyone who is helped by the government in any tangential way (such as rescued refugees like Syd) owe a debt to them. This debt can be paid off by becoming a proxy and being punished for someone else's crimes.
