Are there other books by J.R.R. Tolkien other than the books about Middle Earth?

Yes, he wrote a book called The Children of Hùrin. And another called Beowulf.

Primrosewarrior

what?! Tolkien didnt write beowulf. its an old english epic saga!

Icefire

I love LOTR!!!!
BTW, I see that there was a discussion as to what order the books should be read in. I would recommend that you start with The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, and then Silmarillion and his other books. I say this because Silmarillion is long and complicated and newbies will quickly lose interest. Trust me. It's taken me forever to try to get one of my friends to read the hobbit beacause she thought it would be as "boring" as Silmarillion. Now don't get me wrong! Silmarillion is one of my favorite books, but it's not a great way to start people on the series.
Living in peace, aye many a season,
Calm in life and sound in reason,,
'Til evil arrives, a wicked horde,
Driving a warrior to pick up his sword,
The challenger rings then, straight and fair,
Justice is with us, beware. Beware!

Tolkien wrote Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics. And for those who didn't know, Tolkien was a great friend of C.S. Lewis, writer of the Chronicles of Narnia.

Redwallfan7

I knew that. Any true Narnia fan should know that.

Correction there mate. He didn't write Beowulf; he simply translated it and then wrote a long analytical essay called "Beowulf: the Monsters and the Critics."

And "Children of Hurin" IS in the LOTR universe. It is set during the Wars of Beleriand, which is the ancient war that lays deep in the tales of the races of Middle-Earth. It was during this war that Elrond, Galadriel, and the Woodland Elves established their kingdoms, and it's also the time period when Gandalf, Thorin, and Bilbo's swords got forged.

True dat! Silmarillion is rated M for MANLY, 'cause it's so freakin' EPIC! It is several different narratives strung along one basic Quest: to win back the three Jewels of Light (aka the Silmarils) from the Dark Lord Morgoth, Black Foe of the World!

*I so completely GEEKED right there... Sorry ::) ;D

Here's a real one Tolkien wrote that isn't Middle Earth: Mr. Bliss

Firehawke

He actually wrote a number of things not connected to Middle-Earth.  Here's a link to a bibliography of his works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._R._R._Tolkien_bibliography

Don't forget "Leaf by Niggle"

Tolkien also wrote a Santa Claus story once, too. Anybody remember what it was called?
