some dude farted on another dudes sandwich and the other dude got mad at him and appealed to the government of his country and they decided to make war on the other country for disorderly farting and the other country had an alliance with half the countries in the world and the other country had an alliance with the other half. that is the most likely scenario

-Sometime later, the second mate was unexpectedly rescued by the subplot, which had been trailing a bit behind the boat (and the plot). The whole story moved along.
