I'm confused. You drove through a tree? That doesn't even make sense. Plus, I thought you weren't driving yet.

Wait, how old do you have to be in America to be able to drive?

Down here, you have to be 16 before you're allowed to learn to drive (with a parent/driving instructor in the passenger seat), and you can't drive on your own until you're 17.

Including needing a license, not a permit. And you must take a class to get your license before 18. After 18, you just need to take the test.

Down here, you take a written test at 16 or older. This gets you your Learner License, which allows you to drive so long as someone with their license is in the front seat.

Once you've driven 100 hours over a year (so, 17 or 1 year after you got your Ls), you take a Practical Driving Test (you drive around and do some stuff with a bloke in the front seat from the Aussie!DMV.

You pass that, you get your "Red Provisional License." You can drive on your own, but if you screw up, the penalties are harsher.

Once you've had  your Red Ps for a year, you switch over to Green Ps. Hold them for 2 years, and you finally get a standard license.

You have to do all that unless you're 23 or older, in which you go straight to the Green Ps after you're done with your Ls.

In America in varies by state. I had a friend who lived in New York and I think there you have to be 16 to start learning to drive. In Michigan, you can take the first course at 14 years and 8 months and get your learner license, after 100 driving hours and six months, whichever comes later, you can take the written test and road test, and many people get their level 1 drivers' license and begin driving on their own on their 16th birthday. After six months or on your 17th birthday, whichever comes later, you can get your level 2 license, the standard one.

So I was a bit slow, I started driving at 15 years and 4 months, got my level 1 license to drive myself around at 16 years and 8 months, and got my standard license at 17 years and 2 months. I had that one until my 21st birthday, when they gave me a horizontal license (rather than the vertical one given to those underage) to indicate I'm old enough to drink.
