Lady Midnight was absolutely fantastic; well worth the entire night's sleep I lost reading it. It's a big book. I must say that either Cassandra Clare is a genius or I am incredibly dense, because I suspected literally everyone possible except the real antagonist.

Contrast to the TV show and their utter disregard for the source material and their relentless crusade to ruin Alec's character. Everything that has happened with Alec in the last two episodes is an insult to fans of the books. Ed Dector and the writers have proven that they don't understand the characters at all. Alec is not "Always obey the Clave" he's "obey the Clave unless they're being stupid and/or cruel." And Jace is not "don't let your heart rule your head" he's "to love is to destroy." How can they misunderstand such basics of these characters. The show was getting better and then they decided to [word unprintable] the characters and drive any appeal they had into the ground. Alec and Simon were the best parts of this stupid show and now Alec's character is completely destroyed and Simon's is dangerously close to following him.

The more time I've had to think about Lady Midnight, the more I'm interested in one thing.

For those who know the Shadowhunter books, you'll know that the Shadowhunter motto (or one of them any way) is "Sed lex, dura lex;" The law is hard, but it is the law. In Lady Midnight we learn that the Shadowhunter family, the Blackthorns have their own family motto. The Blackthorn family motto is "Lex malla lex nulla;" A bad law is no law.

HOW IS THIS ALLOWED? HOW ARE THE BLACKTHORN FAMILY NOT UNDER CONSTANT WATCH? HOW DID THEY GET THEIR REBELLIOUS MOTTO? WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? THE CLAVE ARE A BUNCH OF STUCK UP JERKS, HOW HAVE THEY LET THIS MOTTO STAND? "A BAD LAW IS NO LAW." THAT'S LIKE SAYING "WE'RE THE REBEL FAMILY." THE SHADOWHUNTER LAWS ARE INDEED A MESS OF INCOMPREHENSIBLE RUBBISH, RACISM, AND A FEW SENSIBLE LAWS BUT COME ON! YOU DON'T TELL YOUR EVIL GOVERNMENT THAT YOU HATE THEIR GUTS!
