And Groddil isn't even American.

Britain, Greece, Egypt. Where else do American placenames come from?

Does anyone ever think about Harry Potter and just go "Why wasn't Dumbledore in Slytherin?" Sure he was brave, but those weren't his defining traits. Dumbledore was ambitious, cunning, intelligent, self-serving and, at times, ruthless. What traditional Gryffindor qualities does he possess aside from bravery and if so how do they overshadow his Slytherin qualities? Or, heck, even his Ravenclaw qualities?

Also does anyone else ever get annoyed when people try to tell them that Severus Snape was a good person? He bullied one of his students so much that he became that student's worst fear, and that student's parents were tortured into insanity. He may have done good things but he was a horrible person.

The Skarzs

True, about Snape.

Also, what do you mean about the placenames?

YES FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME.

Greek place names in America:
Rhode island (Like Rhodes)
Long Island (Like Crete, which was known as the Long Island)

Egyptian:
Memphis
Admittedly that's the only one I know.

British:
New York (Named after York)
Plymouth (Named after Plymouth)
New Hampshire (Named after Hampshire)
Basically any American place with "New" in the name will have been named after a British county (except New Orleans, which is French).

What I'm asking is, where else do your place names come from?

The Skarzs

*Shrugs.* The original colonies came from Europe and England, and some were founded in the name of the British or French monarchy, so they were named as such. Others, like Memphis, I'm not sure what they were thinking. Can't say I agree with all the names, but it can't be helped when it's already done.

My city was named after a US American Revolution general, although it was named in honor of him, not by him. It uses his name, I'm not sure there's anywhere outside the US that uses it. I do know there are at least two other smaller towns that use it in the US.

@Jet the binturong Apperntly there's an Alexandria, Virginia.

First town I've heard of that was so scared of someone they named themselves after them.

@Jet,

Is that a serious question or are you just saying? Because American city/state names literally come form everywhere. But the big ones are from France, Spain, England, Mexico, Germany, Netherlands, Native Americans, and Africa. I'm pretty sure there are even some Asian names but not as many as the European influenced ones.

States in the upper northeastern region usually are named from England, while the southeastern states are more French as you mentioned, like Louisiana, Mississippi and so on. A lot of the Southern states are named for Spain/Mexico, The important ones such as Texas, Arizona, Florida, and California, while a few of the North central states are named from Native Americans, like North/South Dakota, Wyoming and such.

But the USA was founded by Europeans mostly, so it stands to reason a lot of the names have Greek and Roman influence.

Gosh it was an honest mistake, no need to get so emotional about it. I got the chicken right anyway. :-\
