I think it's a good addition.  Much easier to notice than the small number next to "My messages" in the quick link bar.

Honestly, I really don't like it. At all. Would individual members be able to choose an option to hide it? It's ok if that's too much work, I could deal with it

I love it, even the exclamation point. The forum is like "YO BRO WADDUP?" And I'm like "HAI FORUM, WADDUP?" And the forum's like "NOT MUCH CUZ YOU GOT NOT MESSAGES LOSER." And then I'm sad.

It took me a while to notice what you all were talking about; it's so subtle. It's just like the old forum. It's as if the forum's telling me what's up the moment I log in, even though on this day there's nothing up. I like this change a lot.
