"They let me choose a Spartan. Did you know that? And you know me, I did my research. You were like the others. You were strong, fast, and brave... a born leader. But you had something they didn't. Can you guess? Luck...... was I wrong?"

That's probably not the dumbest thing I've done. Actually, it was pretty smart for me, making my dad do instead of me.

"According to some (Generally those who don't have to do it. Politicians and writers spring to mind.), heroic deaths are admirable things. I've never been convinced by this argument, mainly because, no matter how cool, stylish, composed, unflappable, manly, or defiant you are, at the end of the day you're also dead. Which is a little too permanent for my liking."
~ Bartimaeus, Ptolemy's Gate.

"How to be brilliant: make something awesome and blame it on your brain."

"Maybe what I'm discovering is people actually like complexity, and will even gravitate toward it, as long as it isn't a total train wreck. If you unapologetically tackle high complexity head on, and pull it off somewhat, it seems like people will respond well to it. Sure they may not understand it, [...], but they like it."

"Triggering recognition is a powerful tool for a storyteller to use. Recognition is a powerful experience for a reader. It promotes alertness, at the very least. [...] Controlling a reader's recognition faculty is one way to manipulate the reader's reactions as desired to advance the creative agenda."

"I think the main thing is I would have a real hard time writing a character I didn't personally like, or at the very least, find interesting. So in order to make it so I don't hate writing someone's lines, I make it so I like them in some way. And in doing so, I guess often other people do as well."

"Popularity will always be an inscrutable cross product of novelty, quality, dedication, and luck. Unless you catch crazy lightning in a bottle, it will take at least a year to discover how your formula pans out, probably longer. Don't even bother looking at your stat tracker. Focus on making something good."

"There are two ways to do the "obstinate [jerk]" thing as an artist. One is in vehement defense of stagnation. Some artists I've encountered do this, and it's completely indefensible. It's as low as you can get, creatively speaking. The other is in vehement defense of exploration. This is just the opposite. This is a posture everyone should strive for, and these artists are the ones people should be most inclined to offer their attention and support. Adversaries to this cause should be regarded as villains."

"I think writing in voice is pretty simple. It's mostly about consistency. Choosing a set of parameters and then committing to them absolutely. It can even be a [rubbish] set of parameters and a [rubbish] character. But if you keep hammering away at that voice, people will say, [dang] that's some pretty good characterization there! I mean... they might be WRONG, but they'll SAY it. The advantage in being so obstinate with the profile you choose is then any deviation you make will be very noticeable. This is to your advantage, if you control these deviations with purpose and precision. Such deviations can serve as the pillars for character development. They can't happen without the consistency first. And, ironically, without the consistency, they DO happen. For the wrong reasons. Because you [messed] up."

"I just try to make sure every page has some purpose, whether it's funny or amusing, or advances the story in some way. The most important page is always the one I'm working on. I never put out pages just to take up space or kill time. I think if a story manages to be a succession of meaningful, entertaining events, then that fluidity happens automatically."

"I am making the kind of thing I want to read. I am making the kind of thing I wish existed, but doesn't. Yet."

"I write it because I enjoy it and assume everyone else will and take pity on those who don't."

The character voice thing in particular is something I myself try and practice, which is why it kind of annoys me that no one has commented on how Alex speaks, because it means I'm not doing my job right.
"In the meantime, no one should roam the camp alone. Use the buddy system."
"Understood." Will looked at Nico. "Will you be my buddy?"
"You're a dork," Nico announced.
~ The Hidden Oracle, Rick Riordan

*Augustus puts a cigarette in his mouth*
*Hazel uses a oxygen machine*

Hazel Grace Lancaster: Really? That's disgusting!
Augustus Waters: What?
Hazel Grace Lancaster: What? Do you think that is cool? Or something? You just ruined the whole thing.
Augustus Waters: The whole thing?
Hazel Grace Lancaster: Yes, this whole thing.
Hazel Grace Lancaster: Even though you have freaking cancer, you are willing to give money to corporation for a chance to acquire even more cancer? Let me just assure you that not being able to breathe? SUCKS. Totally disappointing. Totally.
Augustus Waters: They don't kill you unless you light them. And I've never lit one. It's a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing. A metaphor.

Augustus: Your hands are so cold.
Hazel: They're not so much cold as underoxygenated.
Augustus: Hazel Grace?
Hazel: Yes?
Augustus: I love it when you talk medical to me.

*Hazel and Augustus and Isaac are egging Monica's car*
*They see Monica's mother*
Augustus Waters: Hello, are you Monica's mother?
Monica's Mom: I am...
Augustus Waters: Hello, ma'am. Your daughter, she's done a great injustice, so we've come here seeking revenge. You see, we may not look like much, but between the three of us we have five legs, four eyes and two and a half pairs of working lungs, but we also have two dozen eggs, so if I were you, I would go back inside.
*Monica's mother looks freaked and goes back inside*
Isaac: Did... That actually worked?
Augustus Waters: Yep.
Isaac: That was the stupidest speech I've ever... That actually worked?

I LOVE THIS QUOTE.

Agreed. I'm already grateful to someone who actually reads my novel; the second-to-last thing I want to do is waste his time. The last thing I want to do is - somehow - have a negative impact.

Quote"I write it because I enjoy it and assume everyone else won't and take pity on those who have to read it because I want feedback."

To be completely honest, I didn't notice that, but I am curious since you've mentioned it. Mind telling me?
