Haha!  Awesome Thomas.  The wizard in the first picture, the one in yellow...I have that same cast, blue painted mine with blue robes.

AD&D is a great system, one of my most favorite editions.  Does your uncle consider himself a grognard?

Thomas Barkshield

Grognard? I don't really know what that means, besides, he hasn't  played for years. Actually, he hasn't played for so long he is kind of "Lending me" his minis (and rulebook). There still his though.

Warner Bros. have recently announced plans to make a new Dungeons & Dragons movie. I haven't seen it, but the previous movie a few years ago apparentlywasn't very good.

BUT Warner Bros have been told off by Universal who are supposedly already making one.

Thomas,

Grognard is from an old French word meaning "old guard".  In gaming it refers to a person who generally prefers the older edition style of play to the newer editions.

Buzzbumble,

The very first D&D movie was pretty horrible, I won't lie! Heh.  The second and most recent third were actually better made and enjoyable for what they were.  I've heard about WB wanting to make a D&D movie...I would see it, especially if it had a proper budget dumped into it.

Anyone play Savage Worlds? It's a line of roleplaying games in all sorts of different worlds and places. I have the guide book for Fifty Fathoms, a pirate-themed one. I've played it through and became a privateer. It almost never gets old. My character is a giant crab.

That is one game I have not had a chance to snag.  I wanted to get it since it has a number of sourcebooks from fantasy to space, but just haven't added it to my collection yet.  How are the mechanics?  D20?  Back when I was looking for a pulp game, I toyed with getting Savage Worlds but when with Barbarians of Lemuria and the Hollowed Earth Expedition.  I'll get it one of these days!

I've only dabbled in Warhammer 40k.  There is a hobby shop near me that has tables dedicated to it.  There are always groups running battles every weekend.

I used to play Battletech quite a bit back in the 90s when FASA corporation was still FASA and not Wizkids.  And branching out a bit...I love Axis and Allies and Ikusa, better known as Shogun or Samurai Swords.  Those two war games are awesome.

The ThinkGeek.com wesbtore is advertising a Dungeons & Dragons themed version of the murder mystery game Clue (or Cluedo for those of us who aren't in America).

Dungeons & Dragons Clue
We like Clue. From Madeline Kahn's Ms. White to Doc Brown's Professor Plum, it was just about a perfect movie. And how much more awesome would it have been with a big dose of Dungeons and Dragons? Loads more! Just look at this game. Instead of the boring Conservatory or Kitchen, you now can accuse other players in the Lost Crypt or Library of Arcane Tomes. And instead of Colonel Mustard or Mr. Green, the players are folks like Regdar the Fighter and Lidda the Rogue. The weapons have been updated too (Mace of Disruption, anyone?) and so have all the playing pieces. This is the game of Clue revised for the DM in all of us. US$39.99 plus shipping More details.

I almost picked that game up.  Considering it uses the 3.5 iconic characters, which I really like.  Though, I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Wizards of the Coast have been putting out many enjoyable board games as of late.  Lords of Waterdeep is a really solid one.

Dungeons & Dragons was of course also re-worked as a sci-fi setting with laser guns, etc., but wasn't as popular.

I own them!  There was the initial module, S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, which had a crashed space ship and laser guns for AD&D.  Then there was Gamma World (Metamorphosis Alpha) which was a post-apocalyptic future with mutants.  And then there was my personal favorite, Star Frontiers!  But sadly you're right, they didn't catch on as well....though Star Frontiers does have an almost cult following now a days.

However, Spell Jammer did.  Space faring, magical ships for AD&D 2nd edition.

I did quite like the old SSI computer RPG game based on the Buck Rogers, and I've got a couple of novels based on that too.

There has been a couple of Star Wars table-top RPGs (by other companies) that weren't hugely popular either.

WoodlandWarrior

West End games put out one that wasn't too bad....

Then WOTC put out a great Star Wars d20 game, it had two editions.  Then they tanked it and made the saga edition which pretty much flopped and then they gave up the rights.
