I did a search but sadly the topic was too vast! ;D

In one of my other topics, I am putting together a roleplaying game based on Redwall and I asked a question to some of the people following.  I got the answer I expected.

But I'll present it here as well...

Do you think Redwall would have been enhanced if the good beasts and other kind were able to use magic.  For example, like a hedgehog wizard?

I personally like the series as is and would generally say no to the addition of magic...but sometimes I do think that fantasy element would be cool.

Well i think a few socceresses and wizards here and there could spice things up ;)

Ublaz sort of used magic

For a minute there I read "hedgewizard" and thought you had watched the Watership Down tv series. :P

Anyway, magic in the literal sense would ruin it.  The spirituality of the abbey and Martin's spirit isn't magic, but like magic, you need to believe its possible to amazed and wowed by it.  In a sense, if the abbeybeasts didn't believe Martin's spirit had anything to do with the saving of the abbey then they would always chalk it up to luck.  It clearly wasn't written as that.

I certainly see your point about magic but not magic. :)  Especially, when it comes to describing the sword.  For the most part it is a regular blade, but with all the myth and power behind it I'm sure you could argue that in other fantasy literature it could be called enchanted.

I love as you said, the spirituality of Redwall and how it works.  I agree with you that the addition of magic would ruin it...though I guess I would say I would not be opposed to a world like Redwall with magic heh! :)

Not to get sidetracked, but Watership Down had a tv series!?  I own the movie but had no clue it had a tv series....was it any good?

And Romsca, can you refresh my memory on Ublaz, what book was that in?  You have made me quite curious. :)

I got the DVDs for it, but haven't watched them - it's a British animated series. There's also a Tales of Watership Down book, recently reprinted which I bought, but haven't read yet (you've just reminded me it's in the cupboard, so I might read that next :)).

Magic would RUIN the series. PERIOD!
Martin the Warrior is way more epic than Mickey Mouse. Anyone who says otherwise is insane, or just wrong.

I agree if there was magic in Redwall then I wouldn't be allowed to read them  :( if you want to read about animals doing magic then read a series called the Welkin Weasels  8)

Kitsune

Hmm, I don't know! I never gave it much thought...
And it's good to see you back, WoodlandWarrior!

Romsca

I kinda put magic in the story I was writing about Romsca... oh well...

Tam and Martin

I don't think it should be put in. I like it just the way it is. I do like though how some peopl(like seers) pretend to be magic!

If you wanna chat, PM me :) I'd love to talk with any of you!

Yeah, seers are neat, but it isn't real magic so it doesn't matter.

Well how I'm going to write it (don't be mad because I am putting specific religions in my story please!) is that Ublaz was a street rat like Aladdin from somewhere even farther south than Southsward where it's all deserty when he was a little kid. One day, the religious guys found a bunch of books with spells and since that's against the Muslim religion they burned them. One of the pages of one of the books blew away from the fire and landed in Ublaz's paws. HYPNOTIZATION. After he hid this (and learned how to read, of course) he conquered the island of Sampetra!
