No, it's completely seperate and different from a radio. It sounds sort of like a violin, except with no violin/string characteristics.

Yep, the theremin sounds like a strange sort of violin (or cat fight) and is played sort of like a xylophone ... but it has no strings, no sticks, no keys to hit ... you don't touch anything at all and simply wave your hands about in the energy field. Here's someone playing one:
