I think he existed, just the circumstances were a bit different than is usually depicted in stories about him. Also, he may have been a folklore version of William Wallace.

Right on the money!    Robin Hood, as a literary figure, is certainly just legend, folk lore or what have you.  But there have been numerous historians who have found real life historical counterparts that may have served as the inspiration for the legend.

Yep, same with King Arthur. He was never a real person, but there are a couple of ancient English kings that are probably the basis for the stories.

In a book by Stephen Lawhead, Hood, Bran ap Brychan the Welsh prince dresses up as a raven to scare people and they think he has magical powers because of that and his uncanny skill with a bow. They call him King Raven the Wizard (or Magical Person). In Welsh, that is Rhi Bran y Hud. Hence "Robin Hood". It's a lot more in depth than that, but that's the gist of the story. Don't read it, though, unless you want to waste time reading a story with too many boring "historical" references, tons of mild swear words, and a somewhat boring writing style

I think the general consensus is that the idea of 'Robin Hood' was inspired by various rebel about the woods type people of the time.
