Ever notice how there are certain oddities that appear ONLY in the first book? Like, for instance, the horse and cart that get Cluny to Redwall?
Myst is the best puzzle game EVER!!!

You can win by losing. Jesus did.

Why are you looking
So intently at the beans
While they are sleeping?

Yes, I have noticed. I started a topic that considered a revision of it to fit in with the other Redwall books.

Life is too short to rush through it.

Tam and Martin

Yes, probably becasue that was Jacques's first book and he wasn't planning on making other books. But as he wrote more, his theme became more solid and consistent.

If you wanna chat, PM me :) I'd love to talk with any of you!

Brian wasn't even planning on publishing redwall. It was done without him knowing by a friend. I guess he wasn't expecting it to sell as well as it did. So upon discovering this, he wrote more and decided the book would be better without traces of humans.
"Cowards die a thousand times, a warrior only dies once. The spirits of all you have slain are watching you, Vilu Daskar, and they will rest in peace now that your time has come. You must die as you have lived, a coward to the last!" -Luke the warrior

Or beavers. That nameless beaver drives me nuts. If you don't give it a name then whats the point.
I am back... sort of... maybe... Hi?

"I am Yomin Carr, the harbinger of doom. I am the beginning of the end of your people!" -Yomin Carr

-Sometime later, the second mate was unexpectedly rescued by the subplot, which had been trailing a bit behind the boat (and the plot). The whole story moved along.

I remember reading an interview with Brian Jacques and he said that animals like dogs and horses, while domestic and calm, were (if I recall correctly) too large to use on a consistent basis. Also, they weren't really woodland creatures (again, more domestic use). As some have already said, it was his first book, so he had to improve on his stories and consistency. I, for one, find the first book fascinating just for these "oddities". :)

And the worst part was that there was a mention of a human!

Vilu Daskar

Never trust a smiling pirate.  :D

I can do that because I'm awesome.

"It really gets up my nose when publishers call my book another Lord of the Rings. It's my bloody book! I wrote it. And another thing, I didn't have to plunder Norse and European mythology to do it!" - Brian Jacques.

Redwaller

It does not change the balue of the story.

Where? The town part, or the village part ?
They told me I was gullible. I believed them.
