You'll notice also that there was generally a diversity of big characters. For instance, Samkim and Arula, Bragoon and Saro, Triss and Shogg, Martin and Gonff, Mariel and Dandin. A lot of these duos were also diversions of character if you know what I mean. The main character (Samkim, Triss, Martin, Mariel, Tagg, etc.) Would often have a very different and sometimes unusual partner (Arula, Shogg, Gonff, Dandin, Nimbalo) These secondaries often held almost as much influence over the story as did the primary, and a lot of the partners were unusual species (Arula, Nimbalo, Most Log-a-Logs, Dippler and Burble (primaries), The red kites or, "butcher birds," Axtel, The hedgehogs from Eulalia and Rogue Crew, The shrew from the Sable Queen, etc.)  There are certain patterns that are best to keep, and the patterns that Brian used sure seem to have gone over well.

True, that is a good pattern, but I don't think that just at least one Redwall book could gave had, per say, a mole as a main character. That wouldn't hurt anything.

How pray tell? The way the Redwall series works is generally adventurous, moles aren't very adventurous! Arula and Axtel being some of the few exceptions. Moles just don't quite fit into some of the pre-requisites for being the hero.

Voles are reclusive and rude, so that makes it extremely difficult to main one of them.

Hedgehogs have had a couple of mains, but are a bit slow and few of number to fit into the category.

Shrews get a lot of side-show, but they aren't exactly the most interesting (unless ther are a bunch of them bickering, that changes things  ::))

See? A few exeptions wouldn't hurt anything. Arula and Axtel both did good in there roles, and you forgot to add Dinny to the list; he was always quick to jump to an adventure with his friends. And they all did fine in there adventurous rolls.

But they wouldn't have made good primaries. That's the big issue, moles are great pals, but they just aren't made to lead. Moles are tedious, they're more lovable than they are dangerous. (I also didn't mention what's his face from Lord Brocktree or Grumm, but that's because I only need a couple of examples)

They don't neccisarly need to be the main character; just in bigger roles than they are usually in.

Hence why I mention Axtel, Arula, Dinny, Viola, Dippler, Burble, Log-a-Logs,  The hedgehogs from Eulalia Rogue crew and Salamandastron, quite a few foremoles , etc. Brian used them quite often, you just have to keep your eyes peeled.  ;)

Still, there roles could be biiger. i.e, Samkin from Salamandastron wasn't the main character, but he still had a pretty big roll. I think that a mole could have had a big roll like that too.

This dosn't just apply to moles, just to say.

There wasn't really A maincharacter in Salamandastron, which actually puts Arula on the same level of importance as the other mains in the book.

I already addressed the other creatures.

Man, this sure beats arguing.  ::)  :D

So true! ;)

But on Salamandastron: you can call that young badger maid (forgot her name :P) the main character.

If you're going to look at from that perspective though, then it was really more about the relationship between Mara and her father (Urthstripe). Samkim + Arula/ Mara + Pikkle (I think that's how you spell it) were co-primary story lines. The four characters together were fairly equal, though Pikkle is a little bit more sideshow than say Arula.
