I always wondered why in some books their are mountains between salamandastron and redwall and in some books there are flatlands.

Maybe they take different routes in different books....now I'm going to have to go through all of them again!

They might but it doesn't look like it from the maps in some of the books. Also in some book's maps salamandastron is diagonal from redwall and in others it isn't.

I've noticed that some books, North isn't straight up...that confuses my poor little brain!

It was suggested somewhere that the "look" of the map changed with the angle that it was drawn at. I'm sure that there are some flatlands and some mountains on the path from Redwall to Salamandastron; but, per say, if drawn on a map that was drawn from a location, for example, way South of Redwall, then the perspective will change. This can be explained from map-to-map.
