I've heard both theories.  Viking attack, fire/age and deterioration.  There's also a theory about human sacrifice you can find.  I'm inclined to believe the age and deterioration theory, but the other two add a creepy twist to the creepy song that I like.

I always thought Ring a Ring o' Roses being about the Black Death was common knowledge. The ring of roses is the ring shaped marks that appear on the skin and the pocket full of posies was one of the crazy theories they had about stopping the plague.
