Whether or not he dies is not relevant- I'm saying that he should have died when he whisked away that bomb- Y'know, the guy that caused a major problem, sacrificing his life so that he could help end it. That makes sense. Moreso if he actually dies, rather than living.

The idea was that Christopher Ecclestone is the Doctor who changes ordinary people's lives for the better. They needed the coward conman in this so they could have the brave soldier who dies fighting against an impossible to beat foe in the finale.

And Jack was pretty darn awesome in the episode with the game station, even if he did come back again.

He was willing to sacrifice his life both times. He was ok with losing it. It shocked him, yeah, but he didn't run away from the possibility. Jack may be a stellar jerk, but he's got what he needs when he needs it.
