Has anyone noticed that swans in the series don't talk? Other birds do, but swans don't. Thoughts?

I think they're all mute swans, mute swans hiss but don't make any other noise. It would make sense for the mute swans to not be able to talk in a Redwall universe
"In the meantime, no one should roam the camp alone. Use the buddy system."
"Understood." Will looked at Nico. "Will you be my buddy?"
"You're a dork," Nico announced.

Oh, yeah, I guess I didn't think of that.:P Does it say they're mute in the books? 'Cause I don't remember if it did or not.

I think the one in Legend of Luke is referred to as a mute swan

Plus, I think Brian just wanted to depict them as, well...beasts.

Not every animal that shows up in a story with talking animals has to be sentient ya know.

In the Tales of Redwall's case, some creatures are just witless brutes driven by base instincts.

Also...the notion of giant killer swans just cracks me up!  :D

The Mask

It's nae really that funny. A boy-o at my school has 7 scars down 'is 'and from a swan attack.
I am a squirrel, an otter, a mouse, a fox, a stoat, a ferret, a weasel, a wildcat, a hare, a hedgehog, a badger; I am the master of disguises, The Mask.

Swans are incredibly territorial and can break limbs

The Skarzs

They can be as large or larger than eagles, with wingspans reaching close to eight feet.

Yipe! I never knew. I'm just so used to them being associated with grace/beauty/elegance or seeing them in kiddy/girly media...

Excuse me? You think of swans, and you think of them being associated with girly media? That's stereo-typing right there.
