Old desktops can be scrapped for bits, fiddled with, lots of neat stuff. Also might be more functional, depending on how old.

  7.  That's what my laptop has.  My brother has 8.1 on his computer, and it's rather confusing to use.  Took me at least ten to fifteen minutes to figure out how to turn the dumb thing off.
