Why in Gooberboy's name did Matthias take off his chest plate when he was fighting Cluny? Why?! It wasn't damaged: just scratched! D:< AAUUUGGGHHH. . .

I dunno... probably cause the creators weren't avid REdward fans: otherwise that whole season would have been better.

Life is too short to rush through it.

Agreeded.  ;D
Because in every series for kids, there must be a easy to realize, but inescapibly bad choice the main character makes. Matthias made several, the armor being one of them. To add drama, they had him take it off. This is easy to  realize as bad (Cluny has a weapon, matthias has a bare chest, :O [think of matthias as a man, bare chested :)]) and the watchers need tension, "Voila!" u got some. ::::)

Probably because it makes it more dramatic. Also, the show is for kids so the animators could have thought that they would not notice.

I mean, if it was live action or something and they wanted the protagonist to seem as macho as possible, I suppose taking off your armor makes some degree of sense. 'I will block it with my chest muscles!' But that doesn't seem to be the intention, and he was still wearing his armor padding. So he wasn't actually bare chested.

Basically: Because nonsense.

I have no idea, I always thought that was to make him lighter and faster. But speed has no advantage in a relatively small area, so hmm. (But Matthias was wearing his abbey habit during the final confrontation in the book, so yeah)

Probably took it off because in movies armor does absolutely nothing anyway. They could wear full plate armor and it would've done absolutely nothing. :P ;D ;D

Yeah; it's a lot more protective than they often show it to be.

It still is going to make me incredulous whenever I think about it. STUPID ACT! GAAHHHHH.

I haven't watched Season 1 in a while to remember this.  The only way anyone would take their armor off is if it was weighing them down or preventing movement.  Depending on when he took it off (in an open area or in a cramped space) there might have been good reason to.  You don't want the armor stuck in a cramped space because then....you're stuck! ;)  If it has to do anything with him cutting the bell, well, the armor or shield would be a balancing act so I'd dump them before I fell.

I myself think Matthias could have worn the armour and survived. (Keeping in mind that the it was just normal plate, plate armour is surprisingly light and the padding underneath keeps the wearer reasonably comfortable, but maybe he wanted to scare Cluny into submission or he wanted to look macho for Cornflower.

It seemed like the only reason he took it off was because Cluny had scratched it with his weapon. He seemed to be fighting very well with the chest plate on, and taking it off just because it lost its sheen is silly.
