I haven't read Doomwyte so that's why I didn't get it.  I thought you were speaking of the lemurs being a weak replacement.

Defiantly true. I preferred them in the earlier books as well. for much the same reason.
In the Long Patrol, if I'm not mistaken, they spoke very primitive english. I'd still call them as much threatening and mysterious as in Mattimeo though.

It seems like the wood of the painted ones is always moving around too, first it was in the south in Mattimeo, then in Long patrol it was up north of redwall. Also, were those things in Legend of Luke while they were rowing downstream painted ones or flithaye, you know the ones that used the net to capture them but Martin cut it while folgrim fought them?

Reminds me more of a Flitchaye than a Painted One...

I thought they were monkeys for a moment. Then I just decided they were their own species: Painted Ones.
It's hard to believe Stonefleck was their commander.
I won't be on this forum much anymore, but I'll pop in to say hi every now and then.

Stonefleck was not their commander, he commanded the Longtail horde

"Understood." Will looked at Nico. "Will you be my buddy?"
"You're a dork," Nico announced.

It be interesting if they were chipmunks, it seems plausible.

Redwallfan7

They looked like monkeys in the t.v show. What are they supposed to be exactly?

I say either chipmunks or a sorta tree rat.

Indeed, They seemed to loose their idendity. The went from strange mysterious and undeaftable when in their own element to. A handable threat, and very understood.
"The way is dangerous, take this." " A gift? Will it protect me?" No, a sword is never a gift. It only brings death. It is a curse and gives you the duty to defend those who cannot defend themselves. I hope one day you will forgive me."
