Nimbalo in The Taggerung is one of my favourite characters. I find him a really complex and interesting character-one i really warmed to and could relate to. Anyone else feel the same?  :)

Log-a-Log

Yeah, I liked him too. He was my favorite character from Taggerung

I always loved his song:

"There's many a patch that I ain't trod,
Nor ever been before there.
An' yet it seems as close to me,
As some ole coat I've worn, sir.
Some streams an' rivers,
Rocks an' fields,
That I have come upon, sir.
I'm seeing them for my first time,
Yet I know every one there.
Now was I here ten seasons back?
Did I sit 'neath that tree there?
An' if I pass this way agin,
Then will I meet myself, sir?"

So epic! :)

Yeah. I like how he kept trying to give deyna scary-sounding names

And then Filorn comes in:

"If I hear you calling my son Deyna the Dangerous, then I'll tell everyone that your name is Nimbalo the Nuisance."

Heeheehee...loved that part!  ;D

Yep, absolutely. A major part of what made Taggerung so enjoyable for me was the duo of Deyna and Nimbalo. They both look nice, have good personalities, yet have unusual interesting flaws (Deyna can't kill, Nimbalo's a habitual liar) which make for good drama when those flaws are brought up. To be honest though, I prefer Deyna. They're one of those pairs that work well together but lose their charm when solo. Deyna when solo at least still has his good ottery looks. Nimbalo... doesn't. This despite Nimbalo being a key part of a particularly heartbreaking scene in the book which was one of many highlights. And it helps that Nimbalo is comic relief from time to time. When he woke up one day, he said "I lived up to my name [Nimbalo the Slayer], I must have slain a hundred ants every time I rolled over."

I recall being kind of surprised when I read about Nimbalo's past with his father. I can't think of any other book where cruelty was revealed in so much detail - maybe it was just that it was his father and they weren't vermin. It makes him special, somehow.

That, and he's got some hilarious lines. XD

I really like Nimbalo.  It made him much more interesting to learn that his brave face was really covering a hard childhood.  In a way, I'm kind of glad he didn't have to meet his father alive again.  I think he might have crumbled back into the frightened little mouse he was when he lived with his father, and I wouldn't want to see him like that.  Tagg and Nimbalo are some great characters.  If it weren't for the lack of action at the Abbey, I would rate Taggerung as one of my favorite books.

-Sometime later, the second mate was unexpectedly rescued by the subplot, which had been trailing a bit behind the boat (and the plot). The whole story moved along.

Yeah, just that he insisted so strongly on it that he might as well have had a principle saying "I can't kill". It reminds me of Abbot Mortimer from "Redwall" stating that Redwallers are creatures of peace and must only use killing as a last resort. Boy that didn't last long. They may be good about attacking only when provoked, but they never try non-lethal force anymore. It's nice to see Deyna embodying that old spirit, even if there's not much practical use for following it when the vermin are relentless and attacking in every book. Also nice to see when vermin are freed to run away (for when they're defenseless), but that doesn't happen often.

No, it was the event that Dotti hinted at a few posts ago. In hindsight I should have taken more notice of it since it's one of those things that the Redwall series never talks about, possibly hitting close to home for some readers. It's surprising that the book can have that effect in the space of only a few pages.

The Cregga part was sad too, but also happy considering how it was handled.

Log-a-Log

Yeah, Nimbalo's past is sad
