The chain is being used to describe the crew. Once the traitor jumps ship, the crew kind of falls apart. In the middle of a storm. And then they fall three thousand feet, because their ship was struck by lightning, they fell into an ocean, and survived, and sailed away. I'm not evil, besides, why'd I need rowers on an airship? There's nothing to row!
