So are the roles random? ;)
No, just the necessary things for a small game like this. (normally there'd be a Mafioso to actually kill who the GOdfather wants dead, but it's just a frivolity)

Quick intro:

At 12:00 noon eight townspeople met in the village square. Someone had gone bad - and taken a few others with them. The town of Salem was no longer safe. The mafia had sprung up.

But someone else - a neutral party - was out to kill even the Mafia, and would stop at nothing to do it. No one but him - he began to be known as the Executioner - knew his target. No one but the Mafia knew their target. A game of mystery, a test of intelligence and the trial of murderers had begun.

;)

Let's have some fun y'all. This is a silent round, do not disclose your role when dead. You cannot talk to the town either - you can view the topic alright, but actually saying your suspicions is not allowed. Executioner will get his target soon.

DO NOT COMPLETE YOUR NIGHTLY OBJECTIVE BEFORE COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.

I can do that because I'm awesome.

My question is, how did you decide who gets which role? I'm just trying to get as much knowledge as possible about the game setup.

Thanks, MatthiasMan, for the avatar!

I just assigned them. No personal preference. Just random roles for random people.

For a recap:

Town Roles:
Sheriff: chooses one person to investigate each night.  The Sheriff will PM the narrator with his/her choice, and narrator will tell him/her if the subject is a.) Mafia or b.) not suspicious.

Doctor: chooses one person to heal each night by PMing the narrator.  The Doctor can heal himself only twice throughout the game.

Jailor: chooses one person to lock up each night.  The Jailor will PM the narrator with his/her choice and then will message that player directly.  The Jailor has the time allotted for night to communicate.  The person the Jailor messages is under no obligation to respond, but it should be noted that this looks guilty, and the Jailor has the ability to kill.  The Jailor can kill two people per game, and only those he has locked up.  If the Jailor kills a townsperson, he loses his abilities for the rest of the game, both killing and questioning.

Escort: chooses one person to distract each night.  The Escort will PM the narrator with his/her choice, and that person will be unable to complete their nighttime abilities.  The narrator will PM the player to tell them they've been role-blocked.  If the Escort chooses to distract the person who is playing the Jailor, the narrator will notify that player that they cannot lock anyone up that night.

Lookout: chooses one person to watch each night by PMing the narrator that player's name.  The narrator will notify the Lookout of the name of anyone who visits his/her target that night, but will not tell the Lookout the player's role.

Mafia roles:
Godfather: kills one person each night.  Executioner is immune to being killed at night, as is the person locked up by the Jailor.

Framer: chooses one person to frame each night.  The Framer will PM the narrator with their choice, and if that person is investigated that night by the Sheriff, the Sheriff will be told that that player is Mafia.  The Framer's role does not work on the player locked up by the Jailor (as he/she is protected while in Jail).  If the Godfather dies, the Framer becomes Godfather and takes on the Godfather's role and abilities.

Neutral roles:
Executioner: is assigned a target by the narrator at the beginning of the game.  The Exe's goal is to get that player lynched by any means possible.  If the target is lynched, the Exe wins independent of the Town or Mafia.  If the target is killed by the Mafia at night, the Exe becomes a Jester.  The Jester's goal is to be lynched.  If the Jester is lynched, he/she wins independent of the Town or Mafia.  If the Jester is killed at night or is one of the final players, he/she loses.  In addition, if the Jester is lynched, the following night the Jester may take his/her "revenge from the grave" on one of the players who voted him/her guilty.  The player chosen dies.

Narrator: keep the game moving by keeping time and PMing players.  The narrator is responsible for...
1. messaging players with their roles at the beginning of the game
2. giving the Exe a target
3. keeping the nights and days on a schedule
4. receiving PMs from players at the beginning of the night and notifying...
   a. the Sheriff of a specific player's role
   b. the person locked up by the Jailor
   c. the person role-blocked by the Escort
   d. the Lookout of the role of the player who visits his/her target
   e. the Godfather if their target is immune to being killed
5. keeping track, during the day, of the time allotted to discussion and voting
6. notifying the players, at the beginning of each day, of who died the previous night, the circumstances surrounding those deaths, and sharing those players' last wills and any death notes left on the scene

Game play:  Straightforward.  Players complete their abilities at night.  During the day, the names of the dead, their last wills, and any death notes are read off.  A certain amount of time (determined by the narrator) is given to discussion.  Then a certain amount of time is given to voting.  In order to put another player on the block, that player must have the majority of the votes (5 of 8, 4 of 7, etc.)  If no one is put on the block during the time allotted, night begins.  If a player is put on the block, that player is given a defense before the final voting.  The final voting is given a certain amount of time (determined by the narrator), in which players may vote innocent, guilty, or abstain.  Important note: voting cannot be anonymous.  Going again by the majority rule, the player on the block is either released or lynched.  If the guilty to innocent votes are equal, the player is ruled innocent and released.  Night begins.

Also, guys, don't forget to create a last will that will be read aloud in the event of your death.  This can contain your own farewell as well as suspicions you have and information you've gathered.  Players who have the ability to kill can also create a death note to leave by the bodies of their victims.  Make sure the narrator has these.  You can change or update them at any time.

EDIT: I fixed my error to the Lookout description.  It's kind of important.

That's helpful. Thank you, Banya.

Glad it's helpful.  Sage, when does the first night end?

I need to inventory the people who have responded - I know the framer doesn't have a need to act yet (right?) so I'm pretty sure everybody's responded... hopefully I can get something up tonight but don't quote me on it.

Not sure what you mean about the Framer.  He/She chooses someone to frame tonight just like any other night.  The Framer's role is to push the blame onto someone else.  Literally, an innocent player is being set up.  If the player framed is investigated by the Sheriff, the Sheriff will be told that that player is Mafia.  This will happen every night unless the player framed is in Jail, the Framer him/herself is in Jail, or the Framer is distracted by the Escort.  The Framers role hinges on the Sherriff's role, which is unfortunate with so few players, as there are more investigative roles in games with more players.  It's all right, though; this will work.  I know it feels like there's a lot going on, but it's only the first night of the first game.

There are some problems with people receiving PMs, they're being solved now. Two players still need to respond.
