But Stephen Maturin's wife, who was furious at her stupid daughter Cecilia for loving the man that had killed her father, fired a blunderbuss, killing Cecilia and fracturing Fredrick's skull, giving him brain damage, and knocking him back into a coma. Then an asteroid struck the earth, driving Fredrick 20 miles deep into the earth's crust.

Yes, she decided to save him from a slow and lingering death, by dropping a rock down the hole left in the asteroid's wake, where she knew it would hit Fredrick, instantly killing him.
