I think I wrote an article about that at some point on the old forum. Just because it's never mentioned doesn't mean it was lost. Since Martin's other equipment isn't super like his sword, though, there's no special reason to use it and risk those valuable historical artifacts getting damaged if they have something else that's just as good available. Also, a lot of the time the heroes were traveling light, and wouldn't want to lug extra gear along.
