Being triggered has a negative connotation and is associated with being sensitive, overemotional, and easily hurt, and is an effective (if below-the-belt) way to negate or belittle the opinions of someone who disagrees with you.

To all artists and writers: If you have ever put a content warning on your work (e.g. blood/gore), you have used trigger warnings.

Actually it has been used for a long while but didn't become a slang term thrown around so easily until recent.
