Filmmaking is a long and expensive career to undertake. A good writer could do the same thing in a book that a filmmaker could do in a movie, at less money and resources. Don't get me wrong, writing a book is hard, but it's certainly better than making a movie.

Movies reach more people, they pack a lot of information into two hours while good books typically take a lot more time to read and create. Also unless your books are hits you're never going to have the audience that even a mediocre movie will have.

Moneywise I would definitely go for the movie.

And as many film studios have proven movies can be just as informative and entertaining as even the best books, besides there are so many new technologies that are being introduced into film making that you can just do so much more with movies. You can do long stretches of visually pleasing scenes to be refreshing, or heated dialogue, and one-liners and jokes are so much easier to do in movies.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good book, but if I was to choose between writing, or screen writing... Oh wait...

You don't become a creator for money unless you're an idiot. Because the fact of the matter is unless you're absolutely fantastic at what you do, pretty much no one is going to see it. You do it to get your ideas out. Money is just a nice bonus.

Case in point: The Hobbit trilogy. :P (They aren't bad, but they really just feel like money makers.)

I've always been a writer, but honestly I'd rather make a movie. I'm just better with visual things, ya know? *Sigh.* It's confusing. :P

Most people go into the business of writing and film making to make a living, for money, not to let people simply enjoy their work for free. Maybe they are all just idiots, but they are rich idiots all the same. ;)

If your into letting people read and watch whatever you make for absolutely free, well that's what Youtube and online writing is for.

Of course they want to make money from it. But it's not a realistic career path for someone who just wants to make money.

Who said anything about that? All I was doing was rebutting your statement where you said: "You don't become a creator to make money unless your an idiot." Because that's false. I never said, nor did anyone else say, anything about people doing it just to make money.

Movies and books are all good (well, except for when you try to convert between the two formats- something is always lost), but I would prefer writing to directing. I have always found literature to have a more powerful effect on the mind than cinema.

Very true, literature can "touch" me more too.

New Poll!

Which are you?
Leader or
Follower
Rosie is weird,
Violets are weirder,
I can't rhyme,
Potato.

Gonff the Mousethief

Follower. I tend to see this as something of a learning experience. If you are a follower, let's say to a King. If that king makes dumb choices and deacions that ruin more than it fixes, you time following him gives you knowledge of what to do it you are King one day. Same goes it the King does good. Plus, I'm no leader and never will be.
I want the world of Tolkien,
The message of Lewis;
The adventure of Jacques,
And the heart of Milne.
But I want the originality of me.

Delthion

I always gravitate toward leading. Not much else to say. ;D
Dreams, dreams are untapped and writhing. How much more real are dreams than that paltry existence which we now call reality? How shall we ascend to that which humanity is destined? By mastering the dreamworld of course. That is how, my pupils, that is how.
