What time is it? You have no idea. It's early. Too early. 4 am early. You groan, and slowly heave yourself out of bed. Your name is Alan Williams. You are a deserter from the US Military. After the President was assassinated by Russians three years ago, you've lost all faith in the government. You never trusted anything the VP said, and now they're in charge of one of the most powerful countries in the world. Your country. You wish you'd voted for somebody else. That... other candidate. That stupid singer. At least he was too dumb to run the country. Wouldn't have gotten himself embroiled in conflict with Russia. Instead, you voted for the man that seemed alright to you. You didn't like his VP, but he seemed competent. And now this. After what happened with Russia, what happened in Siberia...

You pick up a nearby newspaper. The New York Times. Dated a week ago.

Military blockades Manhattan. Are rumors true?

Four days ago, several witnesses reported seeing a bright flash in Lower Manhattan. While the authorities have brushed off the flashes as fireworks, rumors have sprung up about the flash. Some refer to the incident as terrorism, while others state that, following the US's tense relations with Russia recently, America has been attacked, with Manhattan as Ground Zero for a chemical attack. Following a tip-off from an anonymous investigator, the Times can confirm that no damage has been caused at Ground Zero. Following the attack, several residents of Lower Manhattan have developed a strange sickness, which no doctors have been able to identify. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the sickness, sixteen of whom tragically perished within days of the bombing. Yesterday, military blockades have been set up on the Brooklyn Bridge, the Williamsburg bridge, and the Hugh L Carey Tunnel. Citizens of New York are advised not to attempt to travel to and from Manhattan until confirmation is received regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Since that newspaper was published, every way out of the area that you know of has been blocked off. Bridges have been clogged with abandoned cars and the occasional body of somebody that tried to get past, and tunnels have been blocked, locked, and barred. You even saw one person try to walk out over one of the rail bridges. Turns out they anticipated that too. They gunned him down in the blink of an eye.

You toss the newspaper down and head into your bedroom. So that's where it is. You grab your protective mask and finish your breakfast. Some stale bread and a fried egg. If there's one thing you hate about the Quarantine Zone, it's the food, which you seem to be running low on.

Eastern Siberia, 2 months before the end...

That's where it truly started. Back when you were still serving. You were a SEAL, in fact. One of the best. After the President was killed, the VP tried to do whatever they could to find out if Russia was truly involved, and if they planned to strike again. Three months ago, you and your team were sent to Siberia to investigate rumors. Apparently, a whistleblower had come to the government claiming that the Russians were producing some sort of Bioweapon out there. You were on point. They put you on some sort of experimental stealth plane and flew you in. There were five of you. Only two of you made it back, with only three legs between you. You were lucky. The other guy? Not so much. At least he got discharged. They wanted you to go back, but you hightailed it out of there the second they let you out of their sight on the tarmac. You haven't seen them since. After you confirmed the rumors, the VP lost it. Condemned Russia, said that war was just around the corner. Especially now that the whole Manhattan fiasco is going on, you don't know how long it is until the VP brings out the football. You hope it never comes to that, but you know there's no going back now.

There's no point in trying to watch the tape without electricity. Besides, you know what it is anyway. Just VP hate speech. Fun. You don your gas mask and take the safety off your M16. You gingerly push open the apartment door. You wave goodbye to the hamster you keep in your apartment. For practical purposes. If the hamster dies, you know not to take your gas mask off. Still, you've done a pretty good job of making your apartment as tightly-shut as possible. You shut the door and stuff the towel back underneath it, in the gap between it and the floor. You head down the hallway, past the apartments you've already ransacked, and eventually reach a staircase.

You begin to climb the stairs. One floor, two floors, three floors. All empty. All deserted. All stripped of anything useful. You've been busy the last week. It's a shame most of the people in your building either only own fresh food, which a lot of which spoiled when the power went out, or just eat take-out every day. Eventually, you come to the rooftop. You stare out over the skyline of Manhattan. Seems largely untouched, even if the streets are a different story. Case in point, the road behind your building. Filled with abandoned cars and dead bodies, caused by illness or otherwise. The street in front of your building is pretty similar, except it's got the occasional squatter trying to survive. Huddling in a car wreck with a facemask on, hoping they don't get sick. You're just glad you aren't anywhere near central park. Massive fire started there yesterday. Probably from one of the numerous crazies throwing firebombs everywhere and taking their supplies by force. The smoke still clogs up most of the center of the island, and you don't feel like going north any time soon.

You grab your makeshift bridge, really just a fancy wooden flooring plank from one of the particularly expensive apartments, and set it down across the gap between the two buildings. You've already investigated most of the other building, but there are a few apartments you have yet to ransack. Or, you could go to the next rooftop across. From there, you think you can access the next street over without having to go through the crowd of anarchists and hobos.
